Pay-for-play in radio was supposedly banned, but text messages we obtained involving one prominent independent promoter suggest a link between airplay and record label payments https://t.co/I86ErMqKNa pic.twitter.com/8phbwWIUpi— Rolling Stone (@RollingStone) October 5, 2020
Rolling Stone obtained messages from 2019, exposing labels paying radio stations to play particular songs from certain artists. Shawn Mendes, Ed Sheeran and Panic! at the disco were among the bland artists getting a push from the cheating.
Rolling Stone has named some artists teams for using real “Payola” & convincing radio stations to play their songs:
- Shawn Mendes
- Dua Lipa
- Panic! At the disco
- Eillie Goulding
