'Three Body Problem’: Netflix defends itself after being accused of normalising persecution of Uighur Muslimshttps://t.co/29bp9gNMtU— The Independent (@Independent) September 28, 2020
After announcing their decision to greenlight The Three Body Problem trilogy by Chinese author Liu Cixin, Netflix has come under backlash.
Five Senators have penned a letter to Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, condemning the platform. (Side-note and disclaimer: Yes, they are Republicans, they probably don't actually give a shit, there is massive hypocrisy at play on their part and on the US political sphere as a whole. This post is largely to draw attention to what Netflix is doing, to the plight of the Uighurs and not to gas up any US politicians whatsoever. And to be transparent about the information within the source).
‘Game of Thrones’ showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have also signed on to the project.
During an interivew in 2019, Liu said: “Would you rather that they be hacking away at bodies at train stations and schools in terrorist attacks?" [...] “If anything, the government is helping their economy and trying to lift them out of poverty.”
Currently, over a million Uighurs are being held in interment camps in the northwestern province of Xinjiang.
