David Oyelowo on Why He’s Working With Director Nate Parker

Nate Parker is directing David Oyelowo’s film “Sweet Thunder,” a biopic about boxing great Sugar Ray Robinson.
Oyelowo defended his decision to work with the filmmaker.

“I have a pretty good discernment when it comes to good people. He is a good person beyond his fallibility, beyond the mistakes he made. And I believe in redemption. I believe in forgiveness and he is someone I have been around enough to know that in my opinion he is worthy of that.”

“He made mistakes in the middle of that whole controversy. He lacked a certain contrition that he now has as a human being. I believe that the man that is going to re-emerge when he does come back into the public consciousness is going to be someone who people are going to see his regret, see his compassion, see his maturation, see his growth, see his deserving of redemption,”

“As it says in the Bible, all have sinned and fallen short — all of us. Therefore, let us have the compassion to recognize that and see where there are people who are truly contrite, truly desirous to be better going forward. What I would say about Nate is his handling of it when it happened was wrong and it lacked the compassion that needed to be seen.”

“I believe that with time the tide will turn and me working with him is part of an offering to him of my desire to see him redeemed,”

That's cute for you, but when are we gonna see it? And why should we care to give him a second change, we don't know this negro.
Thats the thing though, if nothing else Birth of a Nation shows he fully hasnt changed, atoned, or "grown" at all from that situation.
I can't understand people who volunteer stupid thoughts like this. You could just keep it in your head with "no comment" and less people would notice you working with a rapist.
Forgetting to carry the 4 is a mistake.
Rape is a violent act that is supposed to be punishable by law but rarely is.

As a survivor this just hits like a gut punch every time.
Oof. He really said this with his whole chest
He’s a good person despite the fact that he gang raped someone who subsequently committed suicide

Ok
Like I would LOVE to ask his victim if he’s grown enough to warrant redemption but we can’t cause he raped and harassed her to death, which imo, means he murdered her. He’s a murderer and a rapist. That’s what it is to me.

David should have been cancelled years ago but he is like teflon.
i wrote him off after the zoe saldana as nina fiasco. didn't know he was still out here refusing to grow.
Throw the both in a landfill
this dude has the worst fucking decision making skills ever
GODDAMN IT

i am even more tired of men this week than usual. it's just been a barrage of dumbass opinions. implying that rape is a "mistake" is so fucking offensive and a slap in the face of ANYONE who has had to suffer through that experience (yes, myself included).

can men just ADMIT they don't give a fuck about women/survivors and stop with all this biblical shit?
Rape - just a lil sin, we've all sinned. stfu dude.
this guy reminds me of every carribean/african man hotep whose into ¨traditions¨ and only dates white women.
i rmb after he was supposedly already "redeemed" he said something about how his 4-5(?) daughters will all get married and give birth to grandsons who will look just like him. He's 100% a narcissist who views women as props
I would so love to see the growth, maturation and compassion of a girl he raped. Children she could have had. Art she could have created. Oh, wait, I can't.
Practically with any other person with similar "controversy" I can find something to doubt. But in this case, when your actions lead to someone dying, regardless of what it was, I don't think there should even be "reemerging into public eye".
True regret is expressed differently, than what he does.
Welp, thanks for letting me know I can cancel you too David. And I think you were already on the list, but I can't remember what for.
