Jo Malone London has issued an apology to John Boyega for the "offense" it caused when it reshot a personal video he made for them that not only cut out the 'Star Wars' actor entirely but didn’t feature a single black individual https://t.co/pKOKMStCKw pic.twitter.com/7ZiN7pwmsk— The Hollywood Reporter (@THR) September 13, 2020
Last Summer, John Boyega starred in an advert for Jo Malone London. According to THR, John Boyega conceived and directed the first film — wasn’t made aware of the new commercial’s production, and only found out after it was put on Twitter. So Jo Malone liked his idea so much they went to recreate it for the Chinese Market with a Chinese star - Liu Haoran, cut John out and didnt tell John this was happening!
John Boyega is also the first Male Global ambassador - apparently 'Global' excludes China. He previously discussed the inspiration for advert in an interview with WWD: - "it’s about breaking free of the concept of 'going back or returning to your roots' but more about the roots existing with this new side of my life....It’s not a chapter that stops."
Jo Malone London apologised to John in a statement to THR. "We deeply apologize for what, on our end, was a mistake in the local execution of the John Boyega campaign," "John is a tremendous artist with great personal vision and direction. The concept for the film was based on John’s personal experiences and should not have been replicated."
They also apologised to Liu Haoran.
John's advert won an award for Jo Malone.
