Charlie Kaufman’s Guide to ‘I’m Thinking of Ending Things’: The Director Explains Its Mysteries



Kaufman has managed to out-Kaufman himself with his latest movie, leaving viewers scratching their heads and reaching for Inland Empire for some light viewing. Indiewire has attempted to put together some of the most burning FAQs with some input from the director himself, including questions such as:

The theory is that Jake has invented Lucy out of books, poems, movies, people he has encountered over his sheltered life.

So Lucy’s the main character and she also doesn’t exist?

Yes and no... the question posited is whether a fantasy can live on its own terms.

Why do the parents keep changing?

Jake is going through the many stages of his parents' lives and can't decide on the perfect moment he would have introduced Lucy. That's why she keeps begging him to leave.
