These are some of those moments! (In no specific order)
** Hold On by Alabama Shakes (2012)
must be someone up above saying,
"Come on, girl! Yeah, you got to get back up!
This moment has more to do with Brittany Howard's delivery than anything else. The urgency and determination gives me a jolt of girl power every time. Had a shitty day? Put on "Hold On"!
** Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones feat. Merry Clayton (1969)
It's just a shot away, it's just a shot away
Once again that delivery! Merry Clayton gives it all she's got when singing "rape, murder" to the point that her voice cracks (breaks? I'm not sure what to call it.) Mick Jagger seemed to be into to it too; you can hear him yelling "whoo!" in the background after this happens. In 1986, the Los Angeles Times wrote a profile on Clayton that claimed her physical exertion during this performance resulted in a miscarriage.
** Fancy by Reba McEntire (1990)
You know I might have been born just plain white trash
BUT FANCY WAS MY NAME
Fancy ain't takin' your shit. If you don't scream this part when singing along then IDEK??
** I Get Along Without You Very Well by Nina Simone (1969)
But then I should never
Ever think of spring
For that would
Surely break my heart in two
Perhaps the quintessential breakup song, Simone sounds as if her heart IS literally breaking in two as she sings this lyric.
** No Hard Feelings by the Avett Brothers (2016)
Honestly, the whole damn song. I heard this song for the first time shortly after a friend died of a suspected overdose. I was SO angry with her without even really realizing it. Listening to this song was super cathartic and helped me let go of that anger. The most personal pick on the list, for sure.
