Celebrity cat called Mittens in the running to be New Zealander of the year https://t.co/6xJingi3Wr— The Guardian (@guardian) August 20, 2020
New Zealand continues to be awesome by nominating a celebrity cat, Mittens, to be the New Zealander of the Year. (@JacinaArdern please adopt me. Please?)
Mittens is a Turkish Angora cat who lives in Wellington. In 2018, he was taken to the police station by some concerned locals, who had noticed him wandering around the city in places like the church, post office and the university. However, an employee of the SPCA assured locals that the cat didn't need to be rescued and wasn't even lost, stating that he was just "adventurous". In fact, this employee even started a Facebook page for Mittens which now has 50,000 followers, many of whom keep track of the kitty's activities throughout the city.

Also in the running for New Zealander of the Year are PM Jacinda Ardern and the director-general of health, Dr Ashley Bloomfield.
