At Friday's TCA panels it was announced that Elle Fanning will star as Michelle Carter in the upcoming Hulu miniseries The Girl from Plainville, about the teenage girl at the center of the infamous texting suicide case that gripped headlines in the mid-2010s.
Co-executive produced and written by Liz Hannah (The Post) and Patrick Macmanus (Dr. Death), the series will "dramatize the true story about Carter's relationship with Conrad Roy III and the events that led to Roy's death," for which she was convicted of involuntary manslaughter three years later. (Now 23, she was released from prison after serving 11 months of her 15-month sentence this January.) Its source material will be a 2017 Esquire article of the same name by journalist Jesse Baron, who will serve as consulting producer.
This announcement comes a year after HBO premiered I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth v. Michelle Carter, a two-part documentary about the case in which Baron also appeared.
