Former employees on "Ellen" claim "rampant sexual misconduct" in new report

Follow up to Ellen's leaked apology.

Dozens of employees on "The Ellen Show" have accused producers of "rampant sexual misconduct" in new report.

https://instagram.com/p/CDSp7qVI7D1

On July 16, one current and 10 former employees of the show claimed they faced "racism, fear, and intimidation" in the workplace.

Krystie Yandoli, a BuzzFeed News entertainment reporter said on Friday that she had spoken to nearly 50 former employees who worked on "The Ellen Show."

"All of them say they found what their experience was behind the scenes to be in contrast to what the show makes a profit off of. And what Ellen DeGeneres has built an entire brand off, of which is the 'be kind' message," Yandoli said.

One former employee, a Black woman, reported that she experienced racist comments, actions and "microaggressions." One employee said she was fed up with comments about her race, so she essentially "walked off the job." Other former employees said they were fired unexpectedly after needing to take medical leaves and bereavement days.

Five former employees said executive producer Ed Glavin had a button at his desk that remotely shut his office door, which he used "as an intimidation tactic" during reprimands.

Another former employee said co-executive producer Jonathan Norman "groomed" him by taking him to concerts and other work-related perks. He then attempted to perform oral sex on him.

All of the reports are being denied.

Meanwhile, former Everybody Loves Raymond and Finding Nemo star Brad Garrett tweeted about his experience on the show:

Wow brad Garrett!
Justice for Single Parents, get this dude his job back! Never thought a show would make me love this dude, but between that and this post, I sure do!
I know! Same, I’m still so sad about the cancellation 😭
Single Parents got canceled? Noooo!!!!
He was the best part of that show.

That show was so cute and funny. I loved every single person in the cast.
Wow indeed!

He probably thought everyone forget about his past casual racism.

And we did, until now.

This is why he should have let someone else choose this hill.

Sounds like a damn hellscape nightmare.

Cancel the show.
Her show is getting canceled. I can’t imagine them bringing it back after this.
Cancelled or they'll let her save face by "retiring"
Why not?
Yeah, we're appalled and the media's having fun with this.
But look who her demo is: They've forgiven worst for less.
She's accused of being "not as nice as she seems".
If there's employees that can say she was physically or sexually abusive or racist or sexist, she's done.
But "she's a mean boss" won't mean anything to her demo. Look who they vote for.
In a statement after this article was published, Leman said he categorically denied "any kind of sexual impropriety."

While my job as head writer is to come up with jokes — and, during that process, we can occasionally push the envelope — I’m horrified that some of my attempts at humor may have caused offense

People are so serious these days, it's like you can't even make jokes anymore ugh!
You can’t even make employees uncomfortable with your gross sexual jokes! What has the world come to.
It’s horrifying. 😑
"...we can occasionally push the envelope..." = "We were able to get away with what we did for years and didn't give a rat's ass about how it effected anyone else, but now that the shit's hitting the fan and we're standing right in fucking front of it, uhh...we're writers....? Uhh...oopsies, we're uhhh sorry?"
Sir, this is all a bunch of damn lies. The ellen show has never “pushed the envelope.”
why anyone would feel the need to “push the envelope” w sexual jokes on a DAYTIME talk show...

this bs excuse would work a hell of a lot better if Ellen aired after the watershed
I was going to say...Ellen's show is barely even funny, but it's NEVER edgy. lol
RIGHT... he's not working for Howard Stern in the 90s lol
Five former employees said executive producer Ed Glavin had a button at his desk that remotely shut his office door, which he used "as an intimidation tactic" during reprimands

This sounds incredibly illegal.
Isn't this exactly what Matt Lauer did and had in his office?
Yes! 🤬
I can’t remember reading that, but in no way would I be shocked.
Yup - the exception being that instead of reprimands, Matt trapped women in order to sexually assault them.
Yep.

One thing the report also endeavored to clear up is the desk button in Lauer’s office. It was erroneously reported in multiple publications to have locked his office door, and became an element of media fascination. When The Hollywood Reporter inquired about the button shortly after the first reports surfaced about Lauer, NBC News officials said that Lauer’s office had already been demolished as part of ongoing renovations at NBC headquarters at 30 Rock in New York. The report stated that “according to the NBCUniversal facilities team, the button is a commonly available feature in executive offices in multiple NBCUniversal facilities to provide an efficient way to close the door without getting up from the desk. The button releases a magnet that holds the door open. It does not lock the door from the inside.”

Yes......😡😡😡
I think this is way more common than people think, I don't know if it's just TV shows, but it's almost like something executives regularly request during office builds if it's in the budget.
The same thing was mentioned as being in an office Rob McElhenney recently took over too.

Although it belongs to one of the creators of depraved sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, there is nothing particularly funny about Rob McElhenney’s office, a bland, sparsely decorated room in the corner of a bungalow on the CBS studio lot in Los Angeles. As I wait for him to arrive, in the last days before the coronavirus pandemic shuts down productions across Hollywood, my eyes are drawn to the only unusual feature in the room: a doorbell-sized button built into the desk.

A moment later McElhenney breezes in, walks behind the desk and presses it. Across the room, the door swings silently closed. “When we saw it,” he says, grimacing as he takes a seat on the couch, “we were like: ‘Oh God, this is from a bygone era.’” It’s the sort of sinister tech Always Sunny’s creepy Dennis might employ; indeed, the same kind of button wascited in the 2017 sexual assault allegations against former NBC news anchor Matt Lauer.

Megan Ganz, co-creator of McElhenney’s new show for Apple, Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet, found an identical button in her office next door. “We were making jokes about how wholly inappropriate they are, but then Meg was like: ‘I use it all the time!’ You realise the button that closes the door is not the issue. The one that locks the door, that’s the problem.”

McElhenney is well aware of the way bullying, predatory men have too often been protected by their own power. “This particular industry is so fraught with stories of people being so fucking awful,” he says. “At some point, somebody used that [button] for nefarious purposes. There’s this misconception, and it’s being eradicated right now, but for years it was just a rite of passage for people to have to weather these storms of terrible behaviour. It doesn’t have to be that way.”

trying to read this on Twitter was a nightmare bc q idiots are under every fucking tweet
But will they actually cancel Ellen’s show tho?
I just feel nothing is going to happen to Ellen
Finally this is not just internet rumors or talk, of course nothing will happen (be held accountable) to her or the people responsible for the toxic environment and more, but at least this is out and in the headlines (for now) for the gp. Hopefully the people affected can begin/continue healing, a toxic work environment is truly debilitating.
Good for Brad Garrett tbh. I find it surprising that a fellow celeb would call her out. I thought for sure all her rich friends would be like "I've known Ellen for x amount of years and she's only ever been nice to me!!"
Part of me hopes this is Lea Michele 2.0 and we get a whole bunch of Ellen being trash tea.
The fact that Ellen is really close to Justin Timberlake says enough to me on the most basic levels.
UGH if that isn't enough of a sign
I met Brad Garrett through an actor's workshop and the dude is not only such a sweet guy but he was very personable and transparent about what its really like in hollywood.

Sometimes an instance of mistreatment just stays under your skin. Especially from a show that exudes such a corny, positive aura.
I feel like Brad has to be a level or two below the friends actors. Syndication money has to have him set for life. His life can’t be fucked with so he has no fucks to give. Let’s see if any others in such positions say anything.
The fact that so few of the many many people you would think would think would be celebrities buddies with her aren't saying anything is very telling.
her reputation has taken a nose dive this year

I am glad her corny Keebler elf looking ass is over. Never liked her.
Well, this was a plot twist.
ikr, she told on herself during that whole puppy incident, but people didn't want to believe. none of this surprises me.
Horrible.
I knew there were rumors about her for years but do you think this ramped up because of the whole Dakota Johnson interview?
I love your username so much.

That’s a good theory. I can see the story about Dakota putting some gas on this fire and setting the wheels in motion.

As hilarious as that whole exchange has been on social media I wouldn’t be surprised if that was used as a tipping point.

I think past Ellen interviews have had their moments with celebs clearly not liking her attitude but they would go along. Dakota standing firm in hers and winning that confrontation I think(?) helped further the rumors of behind the scenes attitude.

That is a good theory. When I watched that clip, what really stood out to me the most wasn't the, "Actually, that's not true, Ellen," but the, "I didn't even know you liked me." I appreciate her candor and for being so honest and saying how Ellen gave her "shit last time" for not inviting her. Even when Ellen said she liked her, she looked in disbelief and quietly asked, "...yeah?..."

People think it was all planned, but I'm sure they had an agenda to talk about her birthday celebration, but not all the details of what to actually say. What was worse was that Ellen lied and said she was out of town and had this "thing," and it was actually that time she was hanging with her friend, George Bush. She really did that to herself.

I feel like news outlets definitely started digging after that interview. The information was out there already, but it made a resurgence because someone as high profile as Dakota seemed so very much done.
Did the Dakota interview correlate with Ellen chilling with Bush? I felt like that started the push against Ellen in general but I might need a proper timeline.

I feel like the whole Bush picture started it and ofcourse her getting owned by Dakota went viral and people just had enough of Ellen and her passive aggressive interviews.
I feel like Hasan Minhaj correcting her pronunciation was another crack. like, learn how to pronounce a guest's name ho, it's basic decency.

I think it was a combo of Dakota, the George Bush situation, and early into quarantine a podcast host (Kevin Porter, he used to host Gilmore Guys) started a thread where he asked for stories about Ellen and it went viral, and almost every single one of the true stories was about her being terrible

it's summer 2020 retrograde + leo season, that light is going to be shining on ALL the darkness hiding in the shadows!
Dakota Johnson is someone i never thought i would really like but ended up liking bc of her personality on interviews. She kept her cool on Fallon or some other talk show too when the host didn't let her speak.
There has been stories going around for years (more than a decade even) about Ellen, but I think what started it this time is when she compared quarantine to being in prison. Everything followed suit after that.
Nikki Tutorial added more fuel to the fire also since she was more direct about it
insane how it took this damn long for everything to come out. also i've always been suspicious of any celeb or show that uses "friendliness" and "charm" as a brand, the same way i side eye people who describe themselves as "kind" and "giving"
lol even on dating apps, if a guy says that he's kind or a gentleman, it's an automatic swipe left. No one who actually is will describe themselves as such.
I’m the same for people whose go to description for themselves is “smart” or “intelligent”

Don’t tell us, show us lol

I worked on Rachael Ray's show and she's pretty unfriendly. She wouldn't even acknowledge me as a human being, while I lint rolled dog hair off her pants.
"empath"
Do you guys think she's awful at home too? I'm halfway through my reading of Portia's book and after all she's lived and whenever I've seen her she's seems kind and soft-spoken I just hope Ellen is nice to her at least 😬
This seems like an excellent excuse for Portia to initiate a divorce if she wanted that.

Deleted comment

Not to spoil it but I read it about ten years ago and one thing that stuck with me was that after reading portia’s book Ellen said something like “you were crazy” in a joking way about it. I don’t know the exact quote but it sat with me wrong
Yeah I get red flags when anyone calls their wife/ or any woman in general "crazy" because that's historically gaslighting 101
I hope Portia is okay too. I think someone posted a rumor on here that she doesn’t act much anymore because Ellen doesn’t want her to work, which is so messed up

People are generally nicer/kinder to their family, friends and partners. But with Ellen, I feel like she's probably been nasty at times because of her sense of humor. Ellen is funny but she's got a cruel sarcastic nastiness to her humor at times.
During stay at home I started to follow Portia, I’ve always liked her. Poor thing is like a nervous bird whenever Ellen is around and Ellen’s attitude, I’m sure it’s just part of an act, but her attitude is snobby and demanding. Portia struggling to cook a beautiful meal day in day out and Ellen criticizing and critiquing everything, it’s awful and sad.

I wonder why now and not before.... like rumours have been spreading for years about her. What was the final straw that made this all an actuality, the investigation?
honestly prob that twitter thread? that was at least the seed. the same way hannibal burress called out bill cosby. there's a lot of calling out in general bc of covid. a lot of gloves are coming off
The Hannibal thing is so wild because he'd done that bit before in many other shows, it just so happened that someone was recording and it went viral this time. And of course there have been rumors about Ellen for years now, it's just somehow the right combination of circumstances finally came together, I guess.
Because of Twitter and because people have more time to reflect and more time full stop. I feel like also for the people who used to work on the show on set, now they’re at home and made temporarily unemployed so they’ve got more reason to speak up, and there’s no fear running into Ellen or the producers day to day anymore.

Also on the other side, I have a feeling media publications who cover entertainment segments like Variety and Buzzfeed have so little news to cover atm with no red carpets and no new releases that they have the time and resources to cover things that have been brewing in the background but weren’t time sensitive like getting out a movie review by X date.
i think her using a different crew to shoot her show in quarantine and giving her crew a 60% reduction in pay was the tipping point when it came to current and former employees finally speaking up. everyone else was ready to gossip after dakota and the twitter thread but her fucking with the money of people who have been subjected to such awful treatment seems to be what finally broke the camel's back in that regard.
