In an article for Variety magazine titled "Inside Netflix’s Quest to Become a Global TV Giant". Netflix CEO seemingly takes credit for Parasite's success at the Oscars. The film was nominated for 6 Oscars and won four, including Best Picture, the first non-English film.
"I think ‘Roma’ had a lot to do with that for ‘Parasite’ this year,” says Sarandos. “I think the idea that a foreign-language film [Roma] had 10 Oscar nominations and won three, and the crossover awards categories for foreign-language film, I think really opened the door for ‘Parasite’ to be as successful as it was.”
He also believes Bong Joon Ho’s film “Okja,” released on Netflix three years earlier, also made audiences more receptive to Korean content.
