Universal and AMC Theatres forge historic deal allowing theatrical releases to debut on premium VOD early https://t.co/5ZWoFJv9QP— Variety (@Variety) July 28, 2020
The war started by "Trolls World Tour" has come to a peaceful resolution.
Universal and AMC has signed a multi-year deal that allows Universal's non-tentpole films to be on premium VOD within 3 weeks of its theatrical release.
If a movie participates in the deal, you can rent it at home for 20$ within 3 weeks. Lower rental fees kick in after the theatrical release is 3 monts old. If the movie does better theatrically than expected, Universal can wait to put it on the small screen.
Universal praised the viability of the big screen and AMC hailing the decision as a sign of its willingness to innovate.
