Katy Perry was photographed while running errands wearing a huipil (traditional, loose dress) that women from the town of San Juan Colorado in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, make, prompting praise from Mexican social media users since she has been photographed in the past wearing blouses and other Mexican garments.
However it was quickly revealed that Perry didn’t acquire the huipil from the women of Oaxaca, who use this specific pattern on their creations, but instead from a British designer and former vogue stylist, called Pippa Holt.
Pippa has renamed the huipiles as kaftans and rebranded them in order to sell them on her site for €800+, allegedly underpaying the artisans for their creations, marking them up for over 200%.
Update: upon further investigation online, it appears that Pippa not only takes designs from Oaxaca, but also from different groups in the state of Chiapas, both on southern Mexico.
