Just weeks after self-publishing a 3,690-word essay called "TERF Wars," in which she claimed to support trans people while doubling down on her belief that the ability to menstruate makes a woman, disgraced author J.K. Rowling has once again taken to Twitter to assure us that she is in fact that girl we knew she was.
In her latest 11-tweet rant, Rowling expressed concerns (which she alleges are shared by "many health professionals") that "young people struggling with their mental health are being shunted toward hormones and surgery... a new kind of conversion therapy for young gay people," before echoing an Oxford University professor's sentiments that "[the] use of puberty blockers on under-18s is an 'unregulated live experiment on children.'"
I've ignored fake tweets attributed to me and RTed widely. I've ignored porn tweeted at children on a thread about their art. I've ignored death and rape threats. I'm not going to ignore this. 1/11 pic.twitter.com/hfSaGR2UVa— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) July 5, 2020
Many, myself included, believe we are watching a new kind of conversion therapy for young gay people, who are being set on a lifelong path of medicalisation that may result in the loss of their fertility and/or full sexual function. 5/11— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) July 5, 2020
As I’ve said many times, transition may be the answer for some. For others, it won’t – witness the accounts of detransitioners.— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) July 5, 2020
“The system sees surgery as the easy fix to girls who do not conform.”
Carl Henegan, professor of evidence-based medicine at Oxford University, has described the off-label use of puberty blockers on under-18s as an ‘unregulated live experiment on children’. https://t.co/dDAqENLXor— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) July 5, 2020
The screed was met with criticism by multiple high-profile members of the trans community and their allies. Among them was Juno Birch, the performance artist and fashion darling who has a personal history with the Tavistock Clinic in London, where Rowling alleges many of the aforementioned "experiments" are performed:
JK Rowling needs to be quiet immedietly she is literally harming the trans community, she apparently just posted the clinic I went to as a child and said that they are experimenting on us, when in fact the Tavistock clinic saved my life— Juno Birch (@JunoBirch) July 5, 2020
It’s not that she’s offensive in what she’s saying cos I couldn’t give a crap what she thinks about us, but she plastering it all over her massive platform and infecting the uneducated minds about trans people and putting us at risk in public— Juno Birch (@JunoBirch) July 5, 2020
