Cards Against Humanity sent its only black writer to a mental institution for speaking about racism

  • Unsurprisingly, the majority of the white staff wanted the n-word in the game, Nicholas Carter was not okay with that.

  • He asked one of the co-founders, Max Temkin, about it - How did it happen? Instead, Temkin told the head writers to fire him.

  • They were surprised at his attitude change (being positive, having money, being outspoken), and so they committed him to a mental institution out of 'concern'.

  • The psychiatrist said he was being 'delusional', and would not release him until he agreed that yes, he was only imagining the racism.

  • Head writers Jo Feldman, Julia Weiss talked with COO Nick Markos a week after Nicholas was let out. They pretended they didn't know where he was.

  • The three told Nicolas he could return to Cards if he signed, essentially, an NDA and would 'confirm to behavioral requirements' because he had 'affected the energy of the room'. He did not sign, hence this article.

  • Nicolas was about to give his resignation. Weiss would beg him not to quit, saying the culture could change, and he withdrew it.

  • The three then fired him on a call later, claiming he quit on his own free will.

  • says "Only the most docile, loyal supporters of the company are promoted into positions of power." Which is unsurprising.

  • Honestly the entire tale is why I don't trust startups, and why white liberals are not automatically our friends.

  • The CAD team released a statement rebuffing a lot of statements in an article by a banned source. One of the aspects listed is "But we didn't SPELL OUT the n-word!"

  • Max Temkin has stepped down.

i know it says that his family was involved and clearly this workplace is extremely toxic and racist and fucked up

but a lot of this seems very firmly on the hospital who never should've committed someone with this chain of activity leading up to it...?

like cah is FUCKED up but this is all very on the hospital as well?
And that psychiatrist who thought racism was an illusion or something?!?!
yeah like, to be clear - cah deserves all the shit they are getting from this but the doctor(s) and professionals involved in these decisions have likely done this many times and need some attention...
This is terrifying.
I went to a summer program with Max before my senior year of HS. I didn't know him that well and wasn't creeped out by him, but at the same time I am not surprised.

I can't believe these white people did all this extra shit for him pointing out that the n-word shouldn't be a card it's ridiculous.
It astounds me how many people are willing to absolutely die on that hill. There are plenty of other racist/sexist cards in that game, you can't just let that one go??? It's actually easier to construct this Hitchcockian mind game and have someone INSTITUTIONALIZED than it is to shut the fuck up about one word???
Of course Che responded shittily. OF COURSE he did.

Why is he like this
It's crazy how much influence a workplace can have on your livelihood, especially in this case. So many hours, days, years of your life can be spent working with, working for, or dealing with toxic racist assholes, and people can just be oblivious to it and think you can go about your daily life like everything's okay.

Whenever someone is like “Let’s play CAH!” at a gathering I’m like ohh look at the time gotta go. I don’t understand why people love playing it for hours. It’s so not funny/fun. This is horrific
What the fuck?? How can your employer commit you to an institution??? WHAT????
Burn the whole company to the ground. How disgusting.

Also want to post about this (don't know if people heard) but Bar Stool once again proves the entire company is a flaming piece of shit. The president (?) said Colin Kaepernick looks like an Arab terrorist who works for ISIS and "probably supports Palestine". They described him as having "terrorist skin" and looks related to Bin Laden. The guy literally states "I want to trace his bloodline to see if he has Bin Laden in there.

The only reason I've heard of barstool sports is because the founders or employees keep doing horrendous, inexcusable shit

What is this, the 17th time?
Yup, I remember the union-busting from the owner. This vile shit right here just adds to the egregious behavior.

As an aside: Jax Taylor wanted to work there. Pretty indicative of how shitty that place really is.

This hateful ass “game”. It’s exactly as advertised, is anyone truly shocked by this?
That was a human rights violation
there was a time that i (and my friends) loved that game, but people take it really seriously -- and sometimes literally -- and humor is always different. anyway i was never, ever cool w/ the racist cards but truly when you're alone and have white friends you sometimes just do what you need to do

eventually i wound up really being opening unimpressed, and im absolutely not surprised that this would be its background. <<<<<<<< apples to apples
Psychiatry has a LONG history of dismissing black people's thoughts and experiences as paranoia which has lead to an over-diagnosis of schizophrenia among them. I say this as someone who's currently on medication to take the edge off, but I do not trust psychiatry as a field as it currently stands under capitalism. I'm sure some people have great relationships with their doctors and therapists and I'm glad they've been able to get help they need, but it doesn't change the fact that the field continuously targets marginalized groups and pathologizes their emotions into a personal defect rather than a symptom of a larger societal problem.
It's veryyyyyy convenient that so many diagnoses have ever-shifting names and criteria and such broad symptoms that almost anything can be pathologized and almost anyone can be dismissed as ~mentally ill~
You're sad that you experience racism or sexism or both? Well that's just your personal problem and means your brain is broken despite no medical evidence to back that up! Here's some pills and if you ever express something that indicates you're Too Sad or just something I disagree with, we'll forcibly lock you up where you'll probably lose your job once you're not able to call out and they find out you've been institutionalized. I just don't understand why more people aren't reaching out to take care of their mental health! Your bill is $700 for one session and your insurance decided yesterday they won't cover it.

I've been thinking about the over-diagnosis of schizophrenia. When I was first diagnosed as a teen, they told me I had Bipolar Type I. Flash forward about five years and I read a letter from my doctor to the disability services at my school. It said I had schizoaffective like wtf? No one told me that. But it was on my records along with a whole lot of other shit. I think psychiatry can help, but it's like a lot of subterfuge going on.

And you know I'm hella mad because they gave me a first-generation antipsychotic and that in turn gave me tardive dyskinesia and now I've apparently got a milder version of Parkinson's Disease. This shit makes me so goddamn mad I tell you. I took the medications like I was supposed to. Followed the rules and stuff and now like...?

Half the time doctors (and I include all specialties in this) don't know what the fuck they're doing. They're guessing too and narrowing that shit down.

Like sorry for my rant, but I'm mad as hell.

honestly the social, structural, and institutional aspect for psychology needs to be discussed more.

it's so easy to pathologize and minimise legitimate effects of disconnection, alienation, racism, capitalism onto an individual as a broad, easily-named illness. it's the same case with anthropology where it's a colonial discipline that is built upon a colonial, white gaze that looks down upon non-white people, especially black people.
