Deadline confirms that Tessa Thompson and Marwan Kenzari (Aladdin) will star in the psychological thriller Balestra.
Mister Smith, Endeavor Content and CAA Media Finance will be shopping the film during next week’s Cannes virtual market.
Thompson will also be an executive producer and the film will be directed by Nicole Dorsey (Black Conflux).
Balestra follows a disgraced competitive fencer named Joanna Bathory (Thompson), who is desperate to win Olympic gold. Bathory begins using experimental technology, allowing her to train while she’s sleeping. In her dreams she encounters a mysterious stranger named Elliot (Kenzari). The two begin a dangerous affair that threatens her marriage and her career.
The screenplay was written by Imran Zaidi and it was based on an original story by Aron Eli Coleite.
Part of Tessa’s statement about the film:
“Like the sport that Balestra explores, the conception of this piece is sharp and riveting – its is a fascinating look at the price of winning, and what trouble dreams can become when our sense of self worth, reality and identity are tethered too tightly to them.”
Tessa also said that she’s excited to being work as both an actor and producer. And she’s excited to work with Nicole Dorsey. Pre production is slated to being when the actors finish other commitments.
