Inspired by the wonderful thread by @ketomizu, I posted yesterday about the importance of hiring diverse voices in a writers room. The response to my post was largely "No. Hire the most qualified writer."— Lauren S. Hissrich (@LHissrich) June 4, 2020
Intentional or not, that is a very problematic response. Here's why:
Yesterday The Witcher's showrunner Lauren S Hissrich posted about how diversity in the writers room is important. Many white people got mad about it in the replies. So she tried again to explain exactly WHY it's so important to seek out talented writers of color. Will she be successful? Will the white nerds get it? Or will they still cry about how Triss isn't a pale red-headed white lady on the show?
Lauren's thread was inspired by one posted by Legends of Tomorrow executive producer Keto Shimizu which is also full of important things, so I wanted to be sure to highlight her thread as well.
White TV showrunners, if you are in a position to put together a staff for your show, please begin by actively seeking out writers of color. Don’t wait until you’ve blown most of your writers budget hiring upper-level writers who look like/have a similar life experience as you.— Keto Shimizu (@ketomizu) June 3, 2020
