Netflix has positioned itself with its original series as a heavy weight in entertaining media in Mexico and the rest of Latin America.
However it has been receiving negative attention in social media lately because all of their series use a great majority of white Mexican/Latin actors; furthermore, a great bulk of the stories consist of the hardships that privileged families face.
This issue reached its highest point when a Twitter thread went viral by pointing this, causing even news outlets to pick the story.
Historically Mexican media has been criticized by the lack of screen time for the diversity that exists in the country, showcasing a false image that only white or light people exist on the country, even causing the INEGI (the statistics and geography national institute) to conduct a study on “pigmentocracy”, how the fairer you are, the better access you may have to better education and job opportunities, and the erasure in media of any individuals outside of certain amount of pigment on the skin
