Queen Doria inspired Duchess Meghan's dedication to volunteering & charity work

"Her mom made sure they always gave back," said a source about the duchess's upbringing.

  • Ragland was behind Meghan and Prince Harry's decision to begin volunteering with Project Angel Food in Los Angeles, where the pair help deliver meals to sick individuals affected by the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

"[Meghan] said she wanted to do something to give back on Easter and was talking to her mom and her mom told her that Project Angel Food needs help and Meghan said, 'Yes, brilliant,'" explained the executive director of Project Angel Food, Richard Ayoub.

Meghan began volunteering as a child. Here are a few stories of the Duchess being a force for change -

We all know the dish soap commercial story already. One of her former teachers talked about it:

She also volunteered in Skid Row as a young teenager: "I started working at a soup kitchen in Skid Row of Los Angeles when I was 13 years old, and the first day I felt really scared. I was young, and it was rough and raw down there, and though I was with a great volunteer group, I just felt overwhelmed. I remember one of my mentors (Mrs. Maria Pollia) told me that, "Life is about putting others' needs above your own fears.'"

Another example is when she put together an anti-war protest at her school when she was around 10 years old. One of Meghan's classmates was upset because his older brother was being drafted to fight in the Gulf war. To support her friend, she spearheaded the protest and held a sign that read: "Peace and Harmony for all the world."

After gaining success on Suits, Meghan became involved with One Young World, a charity empowering young leaders around the world and allowing them to come together to brainstorm solutions for world problems.

During her time in Toronto, she continued to work with local charities, like St. Felix Centre, which shared memories of "the lovely Meghan":

We feel very grateful and honoured to have been highlighted by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle, as one of 12 charities doing important work worldwide. 🙏🏻 This photo has Meghan volunteering in our kitchen! ❤ . The couple said: “With the festive holiday season upon us, it’s also a reminder to reflect on those in need – those who may feel lonely, hungry, homeless, or may be experiencing the holidays for the first time without loved ones. It’s an important time of year to help those around you who may be less fortunate, or who would appreciate even the smallest act of kindness. Continuing our monthly tradition of highlighting accounts that do good, and inspired by the “Twelve Days of Christmas” - we have selected twelve organisations caring for those in need - especially at this time of year.” . Meghan Markle was an active supporter and volunteer of St. Felix Centre during her time living in the city while working on Suits. She volunteered on a regular basis in our kitchen as part of our Community Meals Program. The Duchess also donated food from the set of Suits, and on one Thanksgiving she brought in all the food, turkeys and the fixings for over 100 people. . Through our Twitter account we responded to the announcement: “Thank you! Many people here have fond memories of Duchess Meghan volunteering with us – though we remember her just as 'the lovely Meghan'. We're happy to see she continues supporting vulnerable people now as a member of the Royal Family. We'd love for her to visit us again one day.” . Thousands of people have responded to the call to visit our social media platforms, many of them urging people to make a donation to our Lighting the Way Christmas campaign. . Many vulnerable people in our Toronto need your support! If you are planning your holiday giving, please consider making a donation to our Lighting the Way campaign - link in our bio. Meghan also worked with the United Nations’ Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women becoming one of their advocates. In a speech delivered at the UN on International Women’s Day in 2015, she described herself as “proud to be a woman and a feminist”.

There are many more examples. She put together successful projects during her time as a working royal as well, but I focused on her life before she met Harry and waaaay before she married him. This is who she has always been.
I just wanted to add a bit of positivity to the coverage Meghan often gets here.

On a more personal note, I just want to say this: I am with you. You are not alone.
We're all just trying to get by. Give yourself a break. It's going to be OK. Hugs.
