The Native American woman who has graced the packaging of Land O’Lakes butter, cheese and other products since the late 1920s has quietly disappeared. Known as Mia (the butter maiden), the woman was shown sitting in a serene landscape of lakes and woods holding butter. That landscape remains on the Minnesota-based company’s packaging, but Mia is nowhere to be found. On some packaging she is replaced by photos of Land O’Lakes member farmers.
“As Land O’Lakes looks toward our 100th anniversary, we’ve recognized we need packaging that reflects the foundation and heart of our company culture — and nothing does that better than our farmer-owners whose milk is used to produce Land O’Lakes’ dairy products,” Beth Ford, president and CEO of Land O’Lakes, said in a company statement released earlier this year.
As you can imagine, some people (you can imagine what kind of people) are upset and are vowing to stop buying the brand for “caving in” and being politically correct.
Land O Lakes can kiss this butter buyer's ass. My family has been a Land O Lakes family since I can remember. No more. I'm fine with store brand from here on out.— Gracie, Chief Fun Officer 🚴♀️ (@nomorenightowl) April 17, 2020
Your virtue signaling lost you some good customers who were always willing to pay more for your product. #BuhByeLOL pic.twitter.com/SMqMPNLmdW
I never, not once looked at the butterbox & thought of it being racist.— 💙 CrazyGirl 💙 (@WarriorStrong_1) April 16, 2020
I bought it & continued to buy it as a grown adult knowing that it's a butter I used since I was a little girl. When they change the Box cover I will no longer be buying #LandOLakeshttps://t.co/rwhSXWOEEZ
This is beyond stupidity. Since when is the image of a native American woman holding a package of butter racist? Sorry Land O Lakes - buying my butter elsewhere now. You are being led gutless politically correct morons.— Mad Ludwig (@HylandO6) April 16, 2020
What a shame. Are they going to make Aunt Jemima change their name, image and bottle shape next? I would think that would have been targeted the race baiting warriors long before the butter maiden. Also disappointed that Land O Lakes caved so easy.— Sandy Trombly (@SandyTrombly) April 17, 2020
