Indie Film Release Guide: April 10th [An ONTD Original]


We're fast approaching another weekend without movie theaters, but thankfully there are still new indie releases to peruse, and older indie releases to stream on a number of services both free and paid. In streaming news: if you weren't already aware, Epix is currently free of charge, and HBO is offering several of its films and series free for a limited time. If you have a recommendation for a future post, feel free to message me or lmk in the comments!

The films listed are from studios other than the “Big Six” - Paramount, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Universal, Columbia/Sony and Disney. Check out the posts from the past few weeks for more movies that may have already come to VOD: April 3rd, March 27th, and March 20th.

Sea Fever

Plot: The crew of a West of Ireland trawler, marooned at sea, struggle for their lives against a growing parasite in their water supply.
What you should know: Director Neasa Hardiman has directed a lot of television, including episodes of Happy Valley and Jessica Jones.

Plot: Three best friends cross paths with sadistic killers after they travel to a secluded country home to party.
What you should know: Director Marc Meyers had another feature, Human Capital, released last month.

Plot: One petty crime spirals into the next.
What you should know: This is director Sonejuhi Sinha’s first feature film. She made her short film debut at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.

Mother (2009)

What you should know: This is just one of several Bong Joon-ho films now available to stream on Hulu - others include Barking Dogs Never Bite, The Host, and 2020 Best Picture winner Parasite.

Same Boat

What you should know: It’s in French, and was nominated for Best International Feature Film at the 2020 Oscars.

Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool (2019)

Storyline: Miles Davis: Horn player, bandleader, innovator. This documentary feature explores archival photos and home movies shot by Miles and his colleagues, his manuscripts and Miles' original paintings, to explore the man behind the music.
What you should know: It was a nominee at the 2020 Grammy Awards for Best Music Film.

Miss Stevens (2016)
