The YouTuber took part in the latest Tik Tok makeup trend that encourages users to create "fake mugshots" with some even taking inspiration from celebrity injuries and mugshots.
The #mugshotchallenge has been called triggering and tone-deaf, and Charles was called out for taking the challenge too far by making it look as though he was beaten up. In the now-deleted photos, James is shirtless with dark eyeshadow blended around his eye and blood dripping from one of his nose.
hi babe, I’m so sorry that you went through something so awful and traumatic. it’s a tik tok trend going around where people post their “mugshots” and has nothing to do with domestic violence whatsoever. love you— James Charles (@jamescharles) April 6, 2020
I do understand that but this dumb trend has nothing to do with domestic abuse. what about action movies? halloween? special effects? simple bloody noses? this is nothing new— James Charles (@jamescharles) April 6, 2020
despite the fact that hundreds of other influencers and artists have done something similar, I deleted the mugshot trend because it was never my intention to trigger anyone & it's a waste of time trying to have an open discussion with people who hate me regardless ✌🏼— James Charles (@jamescharles) April 6, 2020
James Charles responds to backlash for bruised makeup by comparing it to The Weeknd & Billie Eilish who used bloody visuals for their music.— Pop Base (@PopBase) April 6, 2020
“the weeknd's new album shows him bleeding, and with bruises, yet I haven't seen a single tweet about him glorifying violence or abuse?” pic.twitter.com/nFiD5vq9ey
