GameStop: We're an Essential Business

Welcome to "Retail is Poison" Part 99340930.

Today we feature the video game retailer GameStop, which has declared itself an essential business in order to stay open while a viral pandemic sweeps the country.

In a memo to all stores, executives stated: "Due to the products we carry that enable and enhance our customers’ experience in working from home, we believe GameStop is classified as essential retail and therefore is able to remain open during this time." The memo goes even further to state employees should show the memo to police officers who attempt to enforce stores closing and that officers can call corporate if they have a problem with it.

Meanwhile, employees feel that the company isn't doing a thing to prevent them and customers from getting sick, with some telling Kotaku that they don't have nearly enough (or any!) cleaning supplies and what they have to buy is out of their own pockets. Other say that they fear for their jobs since the company is still requiring those who call out to have a doctor's note. Employees state that if you do come to their stores please be mindful of what you're getting into and don't stay long or touch much of anything.

Due to the backlash, GameStop has announced new policies such as reduced store hours and only allowing 10 people in stores at a time.
