Chris Matthews opened his MSNBC show Hardball tonight announcing that he was "retiring," effective immediately. He stated he and the network agreed to part ways (aka he got fired).
The past week has not been kind to Matthews:
- Journalist Laura Bassett recently exposed him for being a sexist prick in GQ.
- He was taken off South Carolina primary coverage after comparing Bernie Sanders' Nevada caucus win to Nazi Germany taking over France.
- He went at it with Elizabeth Warren over claims that Mike Bloomberg told a female employee of his to terminate her pregnancy.
Staff was told about an hour ahead of time that Matthews was done. He did not return to the broadcast after his opening statement and left it to a shocked Steve Kornacki to take over.
MSNBC will rotate hosts in his place until a permanent replacement is found.
