ONTD Original: Best K-Pop Deep Cuts from January + February 2020

Something has awakened the sleeping K-Pop fan in my soul and I’ve been paying close attention to all of the releases so far this year (despite SHINee not having released a single thing yet). Mostly, I’ve been left disappointed. However, there have been a few gems that have not been released as singles and I’ve decided to share my favourite of the bunch with all of ONTD here:

1. IZ*ONE - DAYDREAM

Album: BLOOM*IZ (Full Album)
Release Date: February 17, 2020
Lead Single: FIESTA

Why Does Daydream Stand Out?
This song stands out like a sore thumb; with the rest of the album having a lighter, almost airy quality to both the music and vocals, Daydream ends up hitting much harder even though it’s still a relatively breezy dance track. It comes in as the 9th track on the album following 2 much slower songs (with track 8 being an acoustic-guitar based ballad) which just adds to it coming across as out of place on the album.

The House-style beat coupled with steady, low-key vocals and some really cool effects contribute to an overall wonderful 80s throw-back dance vibe that still feels modern and fun.

•Is it better than the lead single?: Yes!
•If you like this, you might also like: SHINee - SHIFT
•If you like this, you might also like: SHINee - Dynamite
•If you like this, you might also like: KNK - Sunset

2. ATEEZ - PRECIOUS

Album: Treasure Epilogue: Action to Answer (Mini Album / EP)
Release Date: January 6, 2020
Lead Single: ANSWER

Why Does Precious Stand Out?
ATEEZ's strength comes in the form of writing a dynamic pop track that continues to evolve and gain momentum as the song progresses. This song is no different and it’ll keep you hooked right through to the very end.

I tend to shy away from a lot of the more hip-hop influenced K-Pop tracks and artists in general, but I like the way ATEEZ delivers their hip-hop and rap elements for the most part. The verses here are nice, the chorus is great, and ATEEZ has a fantastic line-up of guys with distinct vocal qualities (which feels so damn rare in a K-Pop group).

Side note: This appears to be the full length version of Precious (Overture) from their 2019 album Treasure EP. Fin: All to Action - so it’s nice to see a K-Pop group actually plan out their releases and follow through on their plans.

•Is it better than the lead single?: Yes!
•If you like this, you might also like: ATEEZ - Pirate King
•If you like this, you might also like: ASTRO - All Night

3. GFRIEND - LABYRINTH

Album: 回:Labyrinth (Mini Album / EP)
Release Date: February 3, 2020
Lead Single: CROSSROADS

Why Does Labyrinth Stand Out?
Labyrinth is a high-energy, unstoppable pop banger on an otherwise forgettable EP. I fail to understand how the title track WASN’T the lead single. Although the girls have been performing the song live on television, Labyrinth has not received a music-video (so far) and was passed over as the lead single in favour of Crossroads which…is not a track worth writing home about. I find it truly strange that Labyrinth was given the B-Side treatment to Crossroads, but here we are!

I do wish the choreography was a little more interesting because this is a really fantastic K-Pop release.

•Is it better than the lead single?: Yes!
•If you like this, you might also like: GFriend - Navillera
•If you like this, you might also like: Infinite - The Chaser

4. DREAMNOTE - BITTERSWEET

Album: Dream Wish (Mini Album / EP)
Release Date: January 8, 2020
Lead Single: WISH

Why Does Bittersweet Stand Out?
Unlike GFriend’s entry above, I fully understand why this wasn’t a lead single as it’s definitely a more low-key, mid-tempo pop track that could easily get lost in the flood of loud, bombastic (and sometimes cacophonous) lead singles of the K-Pop world (which explains why Wish was the lead).

However, this is an easily listenable, cohesive, and pretty groovy tune with very subtle House elements and that plucky electric guitar that seem to be a real trend in K-Pop lately. It’s bright and catchy and well worth a listen.

•Is it better than the lead single?: Yes! (and I actually like most of the title track!)
•If you like this, you might also like: GWSN - Puzzle Moon
•If you like this, you might also like: SHINee - Jump
•If you like this, you might also like: SF9 - Now Or Never

5. LOONA - NUMBER 1

Album: # (Mini Album / EP)
Release Date: February 5, 2020
Lead Single: SO WHAT

Why Does Number 1 Stand Out?
This one was a little harder to pin down because I like it for a lot of different reasons. Ultimately, it's smooth, cohesive, and catchy. I feel like elements of what I like can also be found in the following:

•Is it better than the lead single?: Yes!
•If you like this, you might also like: NCT 127 - Fly Away With Me
•If you like this, you might also like: BoA - Kiss My Lips
•If you like this, you might also like: NCT 127 - Sun & Moon

BONUS. SF9 - FIRST COLLECTION (ALBUM)

I was going to include SF9 on this list but I couldn't pick a damn deep cut because the entire second half of this album is fantastic so go and listen to the full album here.

Standouts: One Love, Like The Hands Held Tight, Fire, Stop It Now.
