Vulture's 100 (7) Best Emo Songs

Vulture had a bunch of contributors make a list of what they thought were the top 100 emo songs of all time. They have songs from bands like Drive Like Jehu, Panic! at the Disco, Los Campesinos!, The Appleseed Cast, The Anniversary, Sunny Day Real Estate, The Get Up Kids, Taking Back Sunday, Cursive, At the Drive In and many, many more. But of course they are wrong, and they left out your faves, so please discuss their inclusions, and add their omissions in the comments. A small sampling of their choices:

#53 Rainer Maria - "Tinfoil"

Six moreCollapse )

Did your fave make the cut?

oh g-d. A Favor House Atlantic, KONSTANTINE, At Your Funeral, Lucky Denver Mint...suddenly I am transported back to a very awkward time in my life.

And I like how they dealt with Brand New.
was popping in to say their paragraph on brand new was amazing
The Used’s taste of ink is on it and I am whole again!

I love this nice mix of artists they have and it wasn’t really just full of FBR bands lol
i really worshipped mcr in seventh grade i remember crying in class the day after the ghost of you mv came out cuz of the scene where mikey dies lmao
lmao i am crying laughing at this comment because its SO relatable

my bff was a mikey stan and i was the official frank stan, i remember her crying after we watched the video on MTV2
Here for Rainer Maria and Rainer Maria only
That's what you get was my ringtone lol
I love a good nostalgia post. Emo/Screamo was my genre of choice in HS. I guess Alexisonfire wouldn't fall on this list.
I forgot all about Sweetness <3

I always thought this was emo, maybe its not? I always put it on my emo depressing playlists

yeah they explained they didn't want to include brand new in the voting for the article due to the shittiness that became apparent about jesse lacey
oh cool!
89. The Used, “The Taste of Ink” (2002) should be higher

I miss the From Under the Cork Tree days of FOB.
"Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE
lmaoooo i was gonna post this but you delivered!
more than 100 comments into this post and not even one including this masterpiece was simply preposterous
lmao i love to send this to my friends at inappropriate times

i like how they handled brand new. i have to still work to retrain my spotify mixes to dislike and not suggest their music because i just feel icky when i begin to hear it.

on that very note, i'm not sure why FOB made it on the list, but they should also definitely be excluded due to pwentz's dating of an underage girl and then writing hatred-fueled, violent songs about her. i guess it's due to it not being at the front of anyone's mind despite multiple posts and articles about this situation and kind of glossed over by superfans. idk. it also makes me feel icky.

not sure about how outside links are treated here but googling 'pete wentz abuse' brings up loads of thinkpieces/discussions on the matter.

People always pick the wrong songs from Paramore. "Everything We Know Is Falling" is where it's at.

"Luna" should've been the Bright Eyes choice too!
Ohh oh oh oh oh I know I'm late to this post but omg is it ever making me nostalgic for my time in high school (and I hated high school) ahhhhhhh
Taking Back Sunday and Bright Eyes forever and ever
still to this day love them
