The father of a former Sarah Lawrence University undergrad has been arrested and indicted on charges of conspiracy, exploitation, forced labor, and sex trafficking, according to the New York Times. Lawrence V. Ray is said to have moved into his daughter's dormitory and targeted her friends, indoctrinating them into a cult and subjecting them to "sexual and psychological manipulation and physical abuse" for nearly a decade.
Ray's arrest comes nine months after the publication of "The Stolen Kids of Sarah Lawrence," an explosive New York Magazine piece that chronicled (in disturbing detail—reader discretion advised) the ways in which he groomed and exploited the residents of the Slonim Woods 9 dorm. Officials say it was the article, written by Ezra Marcus and James D. Walsh, that prompted the investigation into Ray.
In May it was reported that Mark Wahlberg had bought the rights to the New York Magazine article, with plans to star as Ray onscreen. Additional information about the project, to be co-produced by Blumhouse, has yet to be announced.
