Joaquin Phoenix Reveals How Brother River's Death Impacted Him in Rare Interview

Joaquin Phoenix sat down with Anderson Cooper for a rare interview on 60 Minutes where he talked about his brother’s death back in 1993.

River was only 23 when he died of a drug overdose outside of The Viper Room in 1993. Joaquin was 19 and he with his brother at the time.

Joaquin was also joined by his entire family and they discussed the effect River's passing has had on them. Joaquin talks about how invasive the press was and how it impacted the family's grief process.

Joaquin told Anderson that it was River who introduced him to acting and that he feels River's death has impacted his all of his movies.

“I feel like in virtually every movie that I made, there was a connection to River in some way,” Joaquin said. “And I think that we’ve all felt his presence and guidance in our lives in numerous ways.”

River's death is the only celeb death that truly hit me.

Haven't seen the Joker, but I'm happy for Joaquin tbh.
I remember Joaquin's 911 call all over the news and no one should have to deal with that after a sibling dies.
oh he was there? i watched the video but i somehow missed that.
I truly forget they were brothers since Joaquin is such a cretin. Though I do often wonder if River would have turned out similarly. Most likely. Those 90s dudes are kinda unanimously sucky humans.
Keanu turned out more than okay. I imagine River would have aged similar.

me too
you’re right about the 90s dudes but if River was still alive idt Leo would have the same career he does today

This comment has me cryingggggg
this kind of interview seems out of character for him, no?

guess he really wants that oscar
MTE
Mfteeeeee
lol i felt really uncharitable for thinking it but....yeah
right?? i’m so confused and rme @ the timing
MTE
funny that huh considering he's such a private personnnnnnnnnnnn
Didn’t he say after his last oscars that he wasn’t going to campaign again ? Or something ?
mte
River was magnetic. Joaquin once was too.

I think I'd prefer dying myself over my sibling dying.
Same, except that if I die first (and assuming my parents have also passed away), my brother would either become a ward of the state or my daughter would end up with guardianship over him. I hope that I don’t have to start planning for that for many more years, because neither option is ideal.

I think about death a lot more than I’d like to admit because of things like this.
💕 I had to think through those things too and it really sucks and changes you

Is he on the spectrum? Why would your daughter have to take care of her uncle?
I don't have any children, but I'm in a similar situation with my sister. I hope that it will be years before anything happens but it keeps me up at night sometimes.
I literally think about this all the time. It consumes me
Same tbh. I always thought I’d be the first to go. Sad but true
It still blows my mind that Joaquin was only 26 when he filmed Gladiator. He character was a lunatic perv in that role but he did a great job.

Just teared up rn. My heart breaks all over again. I still remember that so vividly. Grew up on River’s movies, so it was such an impact and staple to my life, everything whom I am today and just.... my god, he was incredible. Such a beautiful soul ever lived on Earth and gone too soon it’s like the world shattered in pieces. God, only if I could give him hugs, hold him tight and let him know it’s okay, and just doing everything in my power to protect him at all the cost. Whew I’m getting so emotional. There is never anyone like him ever on Earth.... RIP my prince.

Aww the part where his mom mentions how grief sometimes comes in at random times🥺🤧

Joaquin generally doesn't like interviews and is always awkward and uncomfortable so I can't help but think oscar bait...

That said River took a lot of his looks from his mom.
I'm glad they brought up the I'm Still Here nonsense in this episode.
What did he say? I have no patience to watch a Joaquin interview.
it made him a better actor, able to make mistakes. public humiliation is liberating!

I'll always miss River.

Not going to watch this interview. Of course his pain is genuine, but I'm just too cynical for this timing.
Maybe I'm too positive, but I'm okay with it. If he's sharing his loss and grief, he might as well be gaining from it as opposed to being a sideshow for us to stare at.
Being positive beats being cynical in my books so I’m gonna agree with you.
i definitely feel like it was probably bait but it was touching and sad to see the whole family together and remembering and celebrating him
I still have Dark Blood movie in my possession. I got it real quick when it became available. It was such an viewing experience and I knew enough on behind the scenes of this movie which was.... sigh.... 💔

I have it too but I haven't been able to bring myself to watch it yet. I feel like knowing the BTS stuff will make it even harder to watch.

For lots of reasons this interview makes sense. Didn't Anderson also lose a brother? I think it was suicide iirc
Yeah, he actually brings this up in the interview, as well as the public intrusion that comes with famous deaths.
i knew it happened bc it's been mentioned in anderson posts but i had no idea it was in front of his mum

yes his brother committed suicide at age 23, like river, due to what i believe was a bad reaction to a medication :/ anderson's dad also died when he was rly young too :(

I always forget how young River was when he died. I can't imagine dealing with grief so publicly. That must have been brutal and devastating.
River was one of my first celeb crushes. I was so sad and shocked when he died... They played the 911 call Joaquin made, it was all over the news which was so awful ...so heartbreaking. His voice was like burned into my brain.
My brother was murdered four years ago and it's really impossible to discuss what it feels like to lose a sibling, especially violently and unexpectedly.
i'm so, so sorry you lost him in such a way ❤️
Thank you ♥. It's still like some weird dream that it ever even happened, but I'm coping with it as best as I can.
Oh my, I am so sorry. *hugs*

oh wow that is so sad to hear, im so sorry for your loss <3
Oh jesus. I'm so sorry for your loss.
I'm sorry for your loss, bb <3
My mom's brother was murdered back in the late 70s and I know it still hurts her
hugs...I'm so sorry bb :( I hope you have support on those days that you feel particularly down about it. xo
i will probably burn in hell for this but this "rare" interview seems very suspect as joker was nominated for 11 oscars
Mte especially from mr reclusive
I mean, he doesn't usually do these interviews. I think it's fair to be cynical. we can feel bad for his experience and still question his motives.
i adore river as an actor, i can't imagine how losing a sibling so publicly and suddenly affects you, but yeah considering joaquin's reservations with the media and i've never seen him be so public, it's very well timed
Lol you’re not gonna burn in hell. Everyone does this. J Lo had an interview on CBS Sunday Morning just a few weeks ago.
lol phoenix is very beloved here - i don't think jlo's interview was about a dead sibling
