Netflix 2020 Release Preview

Netflix recently posted a thread with titles and descriptions of their upcoming 2020 releases. This post is that list, with additional information from IMDB where available. There are films from Dee Rees, David Fincher, Charlie Kaufman, Alan Yang and more, starring actors such as Toni Collette, Chadwick Boseman, and Ana de Armas. There are original works and adaptations, dramas and comedies - definitely an attempt to have something for everyone. Read on for more info.

The Old Guard

Miss Americana

Director: Lana Wilson
Genre: Documentary
Storyline: A raw and emotionally revealing look at Taylor Swift; following one of the most iconic artists of our time as she learns to embrace her role not only as a songwriter and performer, but as a woman harnessing the full power of her voice.


Stars: Gary Oldman, Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins, Tuppence Middleton
Director: David Fincher
Writer: Jack Fincher
Genre: Biography, Drama
Plot: Follows screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz's tumultuous development of Orson Welles' iconic 1941 movie Citizen Kane.
What you should know: This is David Fincher's first film since 2014's Gone Girl.


Stars: Courtney B. Vance, Mamoudou Athie, Niecy Nash, Sasha Compère
Writer/Director: Prentice Penny
Genre: Drama
Plot: Elijah must balance his dream of becoming a master sommelier with his father's expectations that he carry on the family’s Memphis BBQ joint.
What you should know: This is director Prentice Penny's feature film debut.


Stars: Lily James, Armie Hammer, Kristin Scott Thomas, Ann Dowd
Director: Ben Wheatley
Writer: Jane Goldman, Joe Shrapnel, Anna Waterhouse, based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier
Genre: Drama, Mystery, Romance
Plot: A young newlywed finds herself in living in the shadow of her wealthy husband's previous wife.
What you should know: Director Ben Wheatley's last two films were Free Fire and High-Rise.

Hillbilly Elegy

Stars: Amy Adams, Glenn Close, Gabriel Basso, Frieda Pinto
Director: Ron Howard
Writer: Vanessa Taylor, based on the novel by J.D. Vance
Genre: Drama
Plot: A modern exploration of the American Dream about three generations of an Appalachian family.
What you should know: Amy Adams and Glenn Close have been nominated for 13 Oscars combined, but have zero wins.

Da 5 Bloods

Stars: Chadwick Boseman, Paul Walter Hauser, Norm Lewis, Jonathan Majors
Director: Spike Lee
Writer: Spike Lee, Kevin Willmott, Matthew Billingsly
Genre: Drama
Plot: Four African American vets who return to Vietnam, searching for the remains of their fallen squad leader and the promise of buried treasure.
What you should know: Danny Bilson and Paul de Meo wrote an earlier version of the script, which underwent rewrites.

The Boys in the Band

Stars: Jim Parsons, Matt Bomer, Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells
Director: Joe Mantello
Writer: Mart Crowley (play)
Genre: Drama
Plot: A group of gay men who gather in a NYC apartment for a friend's birthday party. After the drinks are poured and the music turned up, the evening slowly exposes the fault lines beneath their friendships and the self-inflicted heartache that threatens their solidarity.
What you should know: The cast for the film transferred directly from the summer 2018 Broadway revival of the play.

To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You

All The Bright Places

The Last Thing He Wanted

A Fall From Grace

What you should know: The director is the daughter of David Lynch, and has directed on many television shows throughout her career.

Plot: A multi-generational tale of one family from 1950's Taiwan to present-day New York.
What you should know: Director Alan Yang worked on Master of None and Parks and Rec.

The Willoughbys

Genre: Animation
Plot: When the four Willoughby children are abandoned by their selfish parents, they must learn how to adapt their Old-Fashioned values to the contemporary world in order to create something new: The Modern Family.
What you should know: Based on the book by Lois Lowry.

The Kissing Booth 2

What you should know: Alice Wu also directed 2004's Saving Face, and designed software for Microsoft before pursuing a filmmaking career full time.

Dick Johnson is Dead

Storyline: A daughter helps her father prepare for the end of his life.
What you should know: Johnson is a prolific cinematographer.

The Platform

Stars: Ivan Massagué, Zorion Eguileor, Antonia San Juan, Emilio Buale

Genre: Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller
Plot: A vertical prison with one cell per level. Two people per cell. One only food platform and two minutes per day to feed from up to down. An endless nightmare trapped in The Pit.
What you should know: Premiered in the TIFF 2019 Midnight Madness section.

Crip Camp

Director: James Lebrecht, Nicole Newnham
Genre: Documentary
Storyline: Down the road from Woodstock, a revolution blossomed at a ramshackle summer camp for teenagers with disabilities, transforming their lives and igniting a landmark movement.
What you should know: Lebrecht is a former camper.

Spenser Confidential

Stars: Mark Wahlberg, Winston Duke, Alan Arkin, Colleen Camp

Genre: Crime, Drama, Mystery

The Prom

What you should know: The musical that the film is based on premiered on Broadway in 2018.

Out of the Fire

Lost Girls
