‘Rise of Skywalker’ editor on that Kylo Ren and Rey moment

Rise of Skywalker editor Maryann Brandon talked about Kylo’s final scene with Rey. “I always said, ‘The movie will tell us whether they should kiss or not. We will know by the time we get to the end of our process, if it should happen.’ And I felt it should, and [director J.J. Abrams] agreed with me, and other people who saw the film agreed... I know it’s not for everybody. I know there will be people who wish they hadn’t, but this is a film that was never going to please everyone, and I think that the reviews are kind of reflective of that. The things that certain people love, other people hated. And that’s the phenomenon of ‘Star Wars.’”

On Kylo sacrificing himself by using his life force to resurrect Rey, Brandon said “He got his redemption, I think, in a lovely way. And right after he disappears, [his mother] Leia disappears. I’d like to think that they’re together.”

Funny. Most people I've talked to about the movie have said the kiss wasn't necessary.

Only ones I've seen that liked it are Reylo shippers, lol
No redemption for fascist mass murderers
I’m hoping all the RoS discourse will continue to bring me joy and laughter all the way through to February.
SO embarrassing......
i'm gonna need people who worked on this movie to stop doing interviews trying to justify every choice they made cause it just makes the movie look even worse. just stop.
The kiss was so awkwardly placed, most people I’ve seen pretty much said it felt unnecessary (and it was)
uhm I'm sorry, but that was BEN!
There is no difference.
That's funny because the people I went with (who had no idea about any discourse about this pairing beforehand) thought that it was ridiculously out of place and complained about it without me even having to ask. There was an audible groan in the audience when it happened as well (and the audience was basically dead silent throughout the rest of the film, except for like 2-3 laughs).

So, yeah. This ain't convincing anybody. They just wanted to cater to a very small but vocal section of fans and it backfired spectacularly.
The things that certain people love, other people hated. And that’s the phenomenon of ‘Star Wars.’”

this is a laughably bad justification. so you can make shitty creative decisions because at least some people will like it. and that's def a misunderstanding of why ppl love sw. i'm for gatekeeping if it shield's me from dumb takes like this.
I don't mind Bendemption but they did it terribly. It was so dumb to be like "this is about honoring the Skywalkers!!!!" and then kill off all of them.
lmao @ bendemption.

and don't you honor the people you love by killing them one by one and ending their bloodline forever???
I wish someone would honor the tr*mp bloodline tbh.
Their name will continue with Rey.

Star Wars isn’t a documentary

I've been all about the bendemption since day one, it should have happened earlier. after Hux does a coup and tries to kill Kylo and ends up being the big bad
That kiss was really unnecessary, it was just so bizarre. There was silence in my screening followed by wtf comments and laughter.

"He got his redemption, I think, in a lovely way"

Yeah, a genocidal maniac not having to actually face all the pain he inflicted is indeed lovely.
One of the worst film redemptions ever.
Let's not pretend like Darth Vader got some great redemption arc. lol
I think mostly in those extended universe books, Leia has a famous line about "one moment of clarity doesn't make up for years of atrocities" or something like that. I think those books delve into people's feeling about Anakin and even Anakin himself continues to show remorse over actions iirc. Would've been nice in the movies.
Funny how there was nobody hoping Annakin would survive and be a grandpa to Luke or Leia's children. He was redeemed to his SON'S eyes and to the force, not their world.

That is what I don't get. It was the same with Vader. You can torture, kill, and destroy entire civilizations and then be like "sorry" and then all is forgiven. How is that redemption?

i miss this!
I wish we could’ve gotten more of Ben Solo instead of Kylo. He seemed sweet, but I wish it wasnt Han and Leia’s kid that went evil. From jump I knew they’d do a budget remake of Anakin/Darth and would get redeemed.

this is was such a great moment, we should have had more

People in my audience cheered at that moment.
The fucking tiny 'Let's begin' movement lmao i genuinely love it. The character has humor when they write him...at all.
Honestly, yeah. Ben and how Adam played him really was fun to watch. It was a shame this movie needed to spend half of the time correcting and arguably developing the characters.

Also how is this such good quality? Is this a cam? lol

I can’t believe they released this film and never once thought to include some DIALOGUE for him after he’s become ben again. it’s so weird. the movie is “about” his redemption yet he’s barely in it so why bother at that point.

it was so good! we deserved more ben solo
I went to this movie just so I could see Ben Solo. You don't give me Han and Leia having a kid and not actually show me him being Ben

Adam Driver is a good actor and idk it would’ve been fun to see him, Daisy, John, and Oscar in a more lighthearted scene. The series should’ve actually spent time showing the audience the Ben Solo that Han and Leia raised before he went bad would’ve been much better than what we got.
lol. They're probably going to spend the rest of their lives trying to justify their shitty writing choices while making this trilogy. That's what they deserve.
The movie will tell us whether they should kiss or not.

God, if only there were PEOPLE who mADE MOVIES.
I think they want us to believe these movies just made themselves.
