In Saudi Arabia, it is illegal to be gay; where the crime of being gay can lead to execution. Phillippe has starred in many films with a gay cult following, including 1998's 54 and One Life To Live where he played the first gay teenager in a daytime soap opera.
In 2017, Phillippe defended himself against abuse claims by an ex-girlfriend by saying, "As a man, raised by women, in a household where women's rights, feminism, and advocacy were very muc at the forefront, I am sickened that my name can be found in any article where domestic violence of any kind of alleged."
