While The Simpsons began as a series of shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show, the first episode of the series aired 30 years ago today on December 17, 1989. It was the Christmas episode "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire". James L. Brooks says "It was our birth, as far as I'm concerned." It now holds the record for the most episodes of a scripted prime time show. While the show is past peak cultural dominance and many fans prefer the early seasons to the seasons now, the show is still doing well and is renewed through 2021.
