Newt Gingrich is a guest host, except for Edward Norton segment. That is not a typo.
Edward Norton is promoting his new film Motherless Brooklyn
Summary of conversation [Spoiler (click to open)]
Motherless Brooklyn is a novel by Jonathan Lethem that was first published in 1999. The story is set in Brooklyn, and follows Lionel Essrog, a detective who has Tourette's, a disorder marked by involuntary tics.
Whoopi brings up his film. EN says the character is a hot mess, a lot of paradoxes, he’s brilliant but also has Tourette’s Syndrome and OCD. More extra than Forrest Gump and Rain Man, e.g. underdog character you can root for but he was tougher than that. Abby feels like it’s pure raw talent. EN says he couldn’t have made the film without the cast, names some [includes Willem Dafoe, Bruce Willis, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Alec Baldwin] who did it for no money [Idk if he literally meant free, or for scale or lower than their normal fee]. His tribe of NY actors rallied around him and made it possible. He worked on it for many years, in between his other film projects. Life happens, and so on, finally he got it made and finished. Sunny said, It felt so real (timely). EN sets up the clip. Plays clip.
Abby says everyone has a fave EN film, hers is Birdman. He jokes, everyone says Death to Smoochy. Talks about how grateful he is, does it to connect with people. Whoopi gushes over his acting and flow. Sunny likes that he’s an outspoken activist, mentions climate change, yesterday’s guests (Benedict, Shannon), everyone is complicit. EN talks more about climate change, people can’t deny it. Long past the point of changing light bulbs and small things will solve it. Says we need leadership to take it seriously, make bold changes.
