The stupid non-reason as to why 'The Goldfinch' bombed, according to Warner Bros. domestic distribution president Jeff Goldstein?
“I think the audience wasn’t interested in seeing this literary work on-screen. There were many things that didn’t work, but the biggest was probably the marketplace. The gap between the have and the have-nots is growing even bigger.”
He might be on to something. Even the movie's actors said film was the wrong medium for the adaptation. Terrible "actor" Ansel Elgort said it would've worked better as a play, while Sarah Paulson suggested a four part miniseries.
Either way, it's a flop, and it'll end up costing WB $40M-$50 in losses.
