Telluride Film Festival Wrap-up

Telluride Film Festival, the most low-key and high altitude of the major film festivals, happened in Telluride, Colorado over Labor Day weekend. Unlike other festivals, the lineup and schedule are a secret until the day of: some films from this year's edition included Waves, Uncut Gems, Judy, Ford v. Ferrari, and Marriage Story. Click the cut for the full lineup, pics & reviews.

The lineup for these year's festival had some world premieres, like Uncut Gems and Waves, as well as some films that already premiered at Cannes and Venice.

Adam Driver was honored with a tribute and a Silver Medallion Award before the screening of Marriage Story, at which Martin Scorsese was a surprise presenter. Scorsese, who directed the actor in Silence, called Driver one of the best actors of his generation.
Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones, The Aeronauts
Eddie, Felicity, Laura Dern & more
Laura Dern and Alan Alda, Marriage Story
Julia Garner (The Assistant), Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory), and Alexa Demie (Waves)
Renee Zellweger, Judy. She was also a recipient of a Silver Medallion award.
Adam Sandler (Uncut Gems) and Adam Driver

The strongest reviewed film at this year's festival is Waves, the third film from writer-director Trey Edward Schults. The film centers on a black family in turmoil in South Florida, and has been compared favorably to Moonlight in more than one review. OP is not trying to spoil this movie for herself, but the praise from all corners has been rapturous. The film stars Kelvin Harrison, Jr., Sterling K. Brown, Renée Elise Goldsberry and Lucas Hedges. It will be distributed by A24 for release on November 1st, 2019. If you're heading to TIFF, it premieres there on Tuesday, September 10th.

The buzz on Rupert Goold's Judy as a film has been pretty muted, but reviewers are loving Renee Zellweger's depiction of Judy Garland in the last years of her life. While the film itself could use some work, Zellweger channels Garland physically and vocally, doing her own singing. The film comes out in theaters later this month on September 27th, 2019. It premieres at TIFF on Tuesday September 10th, 2019.

The James Mangold directed Ford v Ferrari was well-reviewed, and seems promising for award recognition, including for its leads Matt Damon and Christian Bale. And while race cars play a prominent role, Mangold insists the movie is really about friendship. The film is set to open November 15th, 2019, but if you're going to TIFF, it premieres Monday, September 9th, 2019.

Parasite director Bong Joon Ho named his two favorites of the festival as the Safdie Brothers' Uncut Gems and Kelly Reichardt's First Cow.
