Yesterday KFC announced it was testing Beyond Fried Chicken, in partnership with Beyond Meat. The plant-based fried “chicken” was made available today at a single KFC location in Smyrna, Georgia, near Atlanta’s SunTrust Park.
It sold out in about 5-hours with massive lines of people outside going around the restaurant. Cars trying to go through the drive-thru also caused traffic jams.
The chain will offer Beyond Fried Chicken in two forms: nuggets or boneless wings, each available in 6 or 12-piece combo meals. The wings cost $1 each ($6 for a half-dozen and $12 for a dozen), and the nuggets are $6.49 for six and $8.49 for 12. Customers can also buy four plant-based chicken nuggets for $1.99.
KFC plans to study its results at this location to decide what happens next, which could result in a larger test or a full-fledged national rollout (similar to BK and its Impossible Whopper).
Beyond Meat has also recently announced deals with chains such as Subway, Dunkin', and Del Taco.
