Jennifer Aniston was almost written off of "Friends"

_"Friends" has its 25th anniversary on September 22. The show premired in 1994 and was an instant hit that ended 10 years later in 2004 to 52 million (live!) Viewers tuning in. Ahead of episodes playing in theaters, a new book called "Generation Friends" sheds a light on some changes and hurdles the show went though before it aired.

_Jennifer Aniston was wanted for the role of Rachel Green, but had filmed 6 episodes of the CBS show " Muddling through". If the show was picked up Aniston would have had to have been written off the show midway throgh the first season. Than NBC president Warren Littlefield told the scheduling guru to kill the CBS show. The show was put on during the summer and NBC decided to put Danielle steele movies opposite the show to almost guarantee to lure viewers away.

_"Reality bites" star Janeane Garofalo was offered to play a harder edged Monica who was more cynical and sarcastic. The producers described the character as having the attitude of Sandra Bernhard or Rosie O'Donnell with the looks of Duff ( A MTV VJ).

_The producers knew Monica and Ross were to be siblings and played by white actors, but were open on casting for the other four roles. African Americans and Asian Americans preformers were on the initial list. It was said that television executives of comedies were more fearful of asking audiences to laugh along with characters of color, concerned that such a show would be ignored by the majority white audience.

_Nbc wanted an older secondary character, as they were concerned that if all the characters were in their twenties, it would limit the shows breakout appeal and that and older character popping in would convince hesitant older viewers to check out the show. Pat the cop, who was based on someone two writers knew, was added but didn't fit. The writers promised the network that the friends parents would have notable supporting roles and they would get guest stars to attract a more mature audience.

_Originally Monica and Joey were going to be the central romantic couple for the show. Joey was going to be a leading man type from Chicago. The producers found this version of Joey to be boring and charmless.
