ONTD Original: A History of Demi Lovato's Social Media Breaks

September 8, 2010

After not showing up to a cancelled meet & greet to say hey to fans who had arrived anyway, like her tour members the Jonas Brothers, Demi posted photos partying with her buddy Travis Clark. After posting pictures a fan tweeted this:

Naturally, fans were livid and the singer received a bunch of backlash on twitter. In what I assume was some kind of coked out temper tantrum, Demi threw her brand new iPhone 4 across the room and decided to take a twitter break. It lasted 15 minutes.

Demi took another break from twitter in the beginning of 2012. Many fans suspected this was a coverup for a rehab stint. Her team attempted to cover it up by doing a Twitter Q&A; but it backfired horribly.

Demi took another break a year later after she read stories on gossip sites about herself. She went on a Twitter rant just before claiming "only surround yourself with people who you CAN communicate with." Many suspected it might be a break up between her and Wilmer.

In yet another twitter break, Demi decided to quit after pitting Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande against one another. She commented an instagram post in favor of Ariana. Naturally, fans went after Demi on twitter, resulting in another break from her. It didn't last long. One day later, Demi came back and claiming she'd be more honest than ever.

October 20, 2016

In October of the same year, Demi took another Twitter break, claiming it would be from both music and the spotlight. It came after Demi took a shot at Taylor Swift's "squad" during her interview with Glamour Magazine, saying she didn't see "anybody in any sort of squad that has a normal body". The comment naturally caused a lot of backlash for Demi, claiming she was body-shaming the women for being thin.

This year, Demi deleted her twitter altogether and has yet to re-instate it. After reports of 21 Savage being detained by ICE came out, twitter exploded with memes about he rapper. Demi Lovato, being a frequent twitter user who noticed the treding topic, tweeted that "the 21 Savage memes have been my favorite part of the Super Bowl". She quickly tried to correct herself. Immediately the internet began backlash, including friends and allies of 21 Savage. The hate was particularly cruel this time around, with people tweeting about Demi's recent OD and relapse, leading Demi to delete her twitter entirely.

Demi Lovato found herself in more hot water, only this time on Instagram due to her twitter being deleted. After Taylor Swift wrote up her response to finding out that Scooter Braun is now the owner of Big Machine and subsequently her entire masters, Demi (who recently signed on to have Scooter as her manager) posted her support for Scooter via instagram stories. Part of her response included a rebuttal to Todrick Hall, who claimed Scooter was homophobic. Demi inserted herself into Taylor's drama as usual by commenting his instagram post saying he couldn't be homophobic because she was part of the LGBTQ+ community herself and he wouldn't have signed her if he was. Almost immediately, the backlash began. Demi took to IG Stories again to say if she was being brought up then she was going to respond, despite no one really bringing her up to begin with. No word yet on if she'll be back today.
