Bali immigration department has created a plan to catch these begpackers and send them to their embassies. Setyo Budiwardoyo from the immigration department said:
“We have seen many cases of problematic tourists, lately they are either Australian, British or Russian.”
Setyo said they have helped these begpackers before by providing them with food and shelter. As time pass, they started to be skeptical because some of the foreigners may be taking advantage of the situation, pretending to be beggars.
Begpackers is referred to western tourists who travel backpacker-style without sufficient funds but ask for donations, freebies, and handouts from locals. The problem has increased with many of these individuals posting about their travels and travel style on social media.
The phenomenon has grown, some countries like Thailand have taken stricter measures: visitors may be required to prove that they have at least 20,000 Baht (USD$651) in cash on them before being allowed to enter in the country and the rise of influencers.
They're everywhere in Southeast Asian countries, most of them are caucasians.
Russian travel videoblogger Aleksander Vinogradov wrote, "just two years ago it was possible to pick up a lot of money at the click of a finger, now it takes more effort than simply to print the pictures and look like a sad shit.”
