Kim Watts, 49, reflects on her awkward encounter with the late Maya Angelou almost 30 years ago.https://t.co/nr8K1xn2D6— MadameNoire (@MadameNoire) March 24, 2019
-Last week, a clip went viral of a student calling legendary author Maya Angelou by her first name.
- Ms Angelou quickly responded"I'm not "Maya" "I am 62 years old. I have lived so long and tried so hard that a young woman lke you, or any other, has no license to come up to me and call me by my first name, that's first. "Also because at the same time ,I am your mother your auntie, your teacher, you see"?
-The woman, Kim Watts found out from friends of the clip, since she does not have twitter.
-Ms. Watts says Angelou response threw her off at first and was awkward. She felt she had insulted her idol.
- She says she was raised by a white couple and wasn't taught to address elders with a prefix.
- Some people thought Angelou was harsh, but at 49, Ms.Watts can see both sides of the conversation and is glad it is focused on respect.
- Angelou later aplogized for her tone.
Ontd, did you call adults by their first name growing up?
