Sweethearts Candies have already surpassed heart shaped chocolate boxes as America’s most purchased candy for Valentine’s Day. So imagine the horror to many when it was reported that the New England Confectionery Company (Necco, for short), won’t be able to ship any to stores this year. But why?
Last year the company announced it was shutting down its factory doors and being sold and in July told factory workers not to bother coming in to work. The company was then sold to Spangler Candy Company in late September 2018, but by then it was too late for the company to have enough candy made and ready for January of this year.
But don’t worry sugar addicts, it’s just for this year. The company should be able to bounce back in 2020. CEO of Spangler, Kirk Vashaw, confirms this in a statement saying, “We are looking forward to announcing the relaunch of Sweethearts for the 2020 Valentine’s Day season.” Quite a devastating blow to a company that owns the major market share.
You’ll just have to skip them this year or rely on the knock off brands. Or maybe trade that chalk-like candy for a nice bottle of wine? Cheers.
Valenstans are coming!
