Joseph Fiennes reveals The Handmaid's Tale scene he refused to do https://t.co/pdfFbBNXia— Entertainment Weekly (@EW) July 26, 2018
Joseph Fiennes says that "The Handmaid's Tale" writers had planned a scene in which Commander Fred Waterford rapes his wife Serena. Spoilery context available at the source (relevant quote begins ~6:45 in the video).
Fiennes refused to do the scene, arguing that "Yvonne had tracked Serena so beautifully that her disenfranchisement with the regime and Fred was so beautifully charted it didn’t need a heavy scene to kind of suddenly push her over the edge."
It took "long emails and defending and pushing," but his perspective won out.
