Daily Show host Trevor Noah responded to criticism from the French ambassador, after saying Africa won the World Cup :
“Africa won the World Cup. I get it, they have to say it’s the French team. But look at those guys. You don’t get that tan by hanging out in the south of France, my friends. Basically if you don’t understand, France is Africans’ backup team. Once Senegal and Nigeria got knocked out, that’s who we root for.”
French Ambassador Gérard Araud wrote Noah a lengthy letter in which he argued that to call the team African is to deny “their Frenchness.”

Noah stands by his remarks :
"Black people all over the world were celebrating the African-ness of the French players. Not in a negative way, but rather in a positive way, going, ‘Look at these Africans who can become French.’ I don’t take their Frenchness away, but I also don’t think we need to take their African-ness away. When I watch what politicians say, especially in France, about African migrants, when they are unemployed, when they may commit a crime, or when they’re considered unsavory, it’s the African immigrants. When their children go on to provide a World Cup victory for France, we should only refer to them as France."
“I will continue to praise them for being African, because I believe that they are of Africa. Their parents are from Africa. And they can be French at the same time. And if French people are saying they cannot be both, then I think they have a problem—not me.”
