19 year old Benjamin Glaze introduces himself to the judges on American Idol and tells them he's a cashier at an electronic store which he loves because sometimes there are cute girls and they aren't going anywhere without saying hi to him. Luke Bryan asks him if he's kissed a girl and liked it. He says no, because he's never been in a relationship. Katy says "come here" and puts her cheek out. When he goes in to kiss her on the cheek she turns her head.
This moment has been used in many of ABC's televised promos and on their social media.
He was tracked down for an interview about it and he expressed his discomfort with the kiss.
”I was a tad bit uncomfortable,” he explained.
He was saving his first kiss for his first relationship and wanted it to be special.“Would I have done it if she said, ‘Would you kiss me?’ No, I would have said no,” he said. “I know a lot of guys would be like, ‘Heck yeah!’ But for me, I was raised in a conservative family and I was uncomfortable immediately. I wanted my first kiss to be special.”
He said the extra screen time did draw more attention to his music.
“So in that way,” he said, “I’m glad she did it because it’s a great opportunity to get my music out.”
He discussed it with his friends and ultimately came to the conclusion that it didn't count: “They agreed with me that it didn’t really count,” he said. “It was lip contact versus a romantic situation with someone you care about. That’s what a real first kiss is.”
He says he doesn't feel he was sexually harassed.
