The Hollywood Reporter asks 4 Japanese-American actresses to watch Ghost in the Shell

  • Particpants were Keiko Agena (Gilmore Girls), stage actor/writer Traci Kato-Kiriyama (PULLproject Ensemble), Atsuko Okatsuka (co-founder of the Dis/orient/ed Comedy tour) and Ai Yoshihara (The Sea of Trees)

  • They spend a huge chunk of time dragging Scarjo for her acting choices

  • Wished the characters would have had Anglo names instead of Japanese ones and hated the plot twist of Major being a Japanese girl in a white woman's body

  • Drag Rupert Sanders for not understanding how the Japanese characters would act culturally: "Where was the shame in this movie?! There should have been a lot more shame."

  • After the backlash against Scarjo's casting Paramount announced they had cast Rila Fukushima and none of the women can remember seeing her in the movie. It turns out she was the model for a generic face mask used for some of the Geisha bots

  • Kato-Kiriyama says that if it was just about money the studio could have cast a Chinese actress to try to earn their money back in China

  • None of them felt they would have been right for Major but they would have liked to see an unknown cast in the role and felt like it was a hugely missed opportunity to create an Asian-American star
