Remember those great [R&B] duets from the past by soul greats artists Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell with songs like Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Precious Love and You're All I Need To Get By or songs like Closer I Get To You and Where Is The Love by another classic partnership of Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway. Also we can't forget other classic duets such as Don't Look Any Further, Fire & Desire and many more duets that have become classic R&B songs.
Well this list will only consist of the (imo) best duets from the 1990s to the present (2000s). I made a long list but had to cut down so I know I'll get some grief on songs I chose but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ .
One Sweet Day (1995)
Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men
Even though this song is one of my least favorite song from both these artists, I can't deny the impact and success this song had in 1995 and still today. The song is about the death of a loved one and 'how the protagonist took that persons presence for granted, both Carey and Boyz II Men wrote the song about specific people in their lives, being inspired by sufferers of the AIDS epidemic'. One Sweet Day spent '16 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, becoming the longest running number one song on the chart', was certified double platinum and was ranked number one on Billboard's "Decade-End Charts'
Keith Sweat & Athena Cage
Keith Sweat along with Athena Cage (who was from the girl group Sweat discovered Kut Klose) came with the R&B classic in 1996 that peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also #1 on the U.S. Billboard Mainstream Top 40 & Hot R&B Singles and was certified platinum by the RIAA.
The Boy is Mine (1998)
Brandy & Monica
One of the top-selling singles from (at the time) rising R&B divas with The Boy is Mine. With both ladies coming off multi-platinum debut albums (Brandy & Miss Thang), The Boy is Mine was created for Brandy who along with producer/writer Darkchild thought it would be better as a duet. Upon Brandy's request, her label approached Monica for the duet. Co-produced by Darkchild and Dallas Austin, the song became the best selling single of 1998 with it 'spending 13 weeks on top of the US Billboard Hot 100 during the summer of 1998'.
Spend My Life With You (1999)
Eric Benét & Tamia
Released as the second single from his A Day in the Life (1999) album, Spend My Life With You featuring Tamia 'spent three weeks at number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs' and was certified Gold.
Can't Believe (2001)
Faith Evans & Carl Thomas
Produced by Mario Winans and P. Diddy with including the sample of Phone Tap from The Firm, Can't Believe peaked at #54 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and #14 on the US Billboard Hot R&B singles.
My Boo (2004)
Usher & Alicia Keys
Various female singers were thought of to duet on My Boo but producer Jermaine Dupri felt that Usher developed a good relationship with Alicia since they previously collaborated on the remix of If I Ain't Got You. So for the re-release of Confessions, My Boo was included where it was atop the Billboard Hot 100 at #1 for eight weeks and going to #1 on the the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Ringtones.
If Its Love (2011)
Kem & Chrisette Michele
Off of his third studio album Intimacy: Album III (2011), If It's Love featuring Chrisette Michele has become a R&B classic that's still being played consistently on R&B stations and has peaked at #24 on Billboard's US R&B singles.
FYI: The album version features Maurissa Rose while the radio single features Chrisette Michele. Of the change, Kem speaks of the version with Chrisette: “...Chrisette is a great vocalist and she's a radio darling, so I wanted to open it up a little bit and invite some listeners who may not automatically venture to a Kem record”
