New Yorker releases scathing review of "Birth of a Nation"

Key highlights: Says the film fails as art and as propaganda. Likens it to a conventional superhero flick arc. "The climactic action of the revolt is not entirely unlike those city-smashing scenes out of something by Marvel: all bravado, very little of the spirit."

-Says the female characters are reduced to just catalysts for actions the men carry out.

-Says we do a disservice to talented black filmmakers like Ava DuVerynay, Ryan Coogler and Barry Jenkins by "extending undue credit to bad art."
