Broadway.com Les Mis opening night video here.

All the negative stuff I've heard about Daphne Rubin-Vega's portrayal of Fantine almost had me doubting she could pull this role off, but she seems to be much better than a lot of people have been saying.

Web site (with pics and clips) for the new production of The Sound of Music in the West End here.

Chicago 10th Anniversary event video featuring Chita Rivera, Melanie Griffith, Antonio Banderas, Rita Wilson, Paige Davis, Christopher McDonald, Marilu Henner, Ben Vereen, Gregory Harrison and others here.

No, she isn't. I actually saw the show. She is not right for the role. It was awful.

I wonder if I would agree or not. I'm planning on going to New York soon. I'm not sure if I should check it out or not since there's other stuff I think I want to see more.

She sounded better on the video then she did the night I was there (I was there on a press night; I think Ben Brantley was there that night, too). The woman just can't sing legit. And I can't figure out why they picked to use her in a cast full of amazing singers- Norm, Celia, Aaron, etc. There's a thousand other women who could have done the role justice. It was very odd.

i imagined she wouldnt be so great.i dont like her as mimi either.
[info]cathedralheat 18th-Nov-2006 03:55 am (UTC)
ah. you speaking your opinion as fact, that's cool. I, among many others, thought her performance was brilliant. She doesn't just stand up there and sing like other Fantines, she put her entire body/soul into it and it paid off for those who can appreciate a different interpretation of a character. Daphne is a love or hate thing it seems but I think she did an amazing job.
[info]shoreless_sea 18th-Nov-2006 05:38 am (UTC)
Yeah, see that's what I figured. You can like her or not, either way she's just not a good choice for Fantine. I kind of think she'd ruin the show for me.

ZOMG YOU SPOILED IT FOR ME!

but srsly "A Little Fall of Rain" makes me cry. :[
[info]jsuccubus 17th-Nov-2006 10:21 pm (UTC)
OMG, I'm so sorry =(
But still, a GREAT musical, go and watch it or read it or whatever.
[info]misspinkkate 17th-Nov-2006 09:48 pm (UTC)
And Aaron Lazar is so hot. And I love Celia Keenan-Bolger.
[info]starspecting 18th-Nov-2006 02:39 am (UTC)
ooh, someone else knows of aaron and aaron's complete and total hotness. mmm mmm.
[info]readingbooks 18th-Nov-2006 04:51 am (UTC)
awww i love celia! spelling bee was fantastic.
[info]misspinkkate 18th-Nov-2006 04:54 am (UTC)
It sure was! I saw it twice- once after some of the other leads were gone (Barfee, Marcy Park), and it was still fun. I can't imagine it without her, though.
[info]dissention_1 17th-Nov-2006 09:50 pm (UTC)
The Sound of Music on stage = ugh. I wonder if they kept in the glockenspiel acts of the Claptrap children that made the movie so wretchedly unbearable.
[info]principino 17th-Nov-2006 09:54 pm (UTC)
gtfo

that movie is my childhood
[info]dissention_1 17th-Nov-2006 09:59 pm (UTC)
Poor child. I would have taken up residence in a gin mill if my childhood had been so brutal.
[info]yourpistol 17th-Nov-2006 10:13 pm (UTC)
Haha, mine too.
In fact, a friend and me just got back from a trip to Salzburg last week. We went 15 hours on a train out of our way just to go there for the SoM tour.
But I'll admit it, it was worth it.
[info]misspinkkate 17th-Nov-2006 09:54 pm (UTC)
Holy cow, how old is Chita Rivera??????
[info]tourbillonbleu 17th-Nov-2006 10:22 pm (UTC)
She's 73.

Christopher Atkins :-D

HOT
[info]dissention_1 17th-Nov-2006 10:10 pm (UTC)
OMG, The Blue Lagoon. Starring Atkins' golden ass and Brooke Shields' itty bitty barely-covered titties. One has to got to love a movie that exists only for the purpose of a pair of underage siblings discovering that penises can be inserted into vaginas. It's like a sex ed flick produced by Club Med.

I still like your Near Dark icon the best. :p
[info]ilikeandrewbird 17th-Nov-2006 10:08 pm (UTC)
if ur looking for something to do tonight, u should go see my friend play on delancy
[info]foreverstruth 17th-Nov-2006 09:59 pm (UTC)
i absolutely love daphne rubin-vega. but completely can't see her playing fantine. i hope some youtube videos come out so i can see her in it! too bad i can't make a trip to nyc to see it.
[info]backinblonde 18th-Nov-2006 01:00 am (UTC)
same here. i adore daphne, but she really doesn't suit this role. i guess we'll see if she's able to pull it off or not! i'm going to NYC in december, and i'd love to see les mis, but i've decided on the apple tree.
[info]cathedralheat 18th-Nov-2006 03:51 am (UTC)
if you're a Daphne fan you know what she brings to a character, she's not going to stand up there and sing the part like a Broadway star, she's going to put 100% emotion into it and it's going to be something different that some people don't want to see. I've heard/seen it and she's amazing but some people are put off by different interpretations.
[info]alligatorandme 19th-Nov-2006 01:58 am (UTC)
Apparently the Broadhurst ushers are real bulldogs when it comes to camcorders, so don't hold your breath.
[info]ems 17th-Nov-2006 10:03 pm (UTC)
I want to see The Sound of Music with Connie a lot. She was so awesome on How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? Glad to see she's been getting good reviews.
[info]zoaster_toaster 17th-Nov-2006 10:32 pm (UTC)
Her voice is amazing, I almost thought she stole Julie Andrew's voice for a second.
[info]ems 17th-Nov-2006 10:37 pm (UTC)
I think she's absolutely fabulous. She's different to JA, but she's brilliant.
[info]foreverstruth 17th-Nov-2006 10:04 pm (UTC)
yep, it's a revival :)
[info]alligatorandme 18th-Nov-2006 05:03 am (UTC)

What a coincidence - I just finished writing a paper on Les Miserables (the unabridged book mind, not the musical) for Uni, and here it is on ONTD. It's like this place mirrors my life ... well minus the coke, the hoes and the sex tapes.
[info]misspinkkate 17th-Nov-2006 10:14 pm (UTC)
Yea, and we're still hoping ONTD can get some of those.

YUK YUK YUK YUK!
[info]abs0lutelyzero 17th-Nov-2006 10:14 pm (UTC)
I'm so disgustingly obsessed with Les Misérables. I saw it three times in two weeks when it came to Detroit. :-\
That said, I would kill to get a chance to see the revival.

Seriously, Daphne Rubin-Vega, wtf. She sounds drunk during I Dreamed A Dream.
[info]zoaster_toaster 17th-Nov-2006 10:31 pm (UTC)
Daphne Rubin-Vega is singing it at a lower key range than it's normally sung, however.
[info]cathedralheat 18th-Nov-2006 03:50 am (UTC)
so you're judging from the 5 second song clip from her "dying" song? or did you see her performance? hm.
[info]abs0lutelyzero 18th-Nov-2006 02:27 pm (UTC)
so you're judging from the 5 second song clip from her "dying" song?
Well, I'd cut her some slack if that was her dying song (because who sounds good when they're dying?), but it isn't.
Also, I don't think I need to hear more than that to know she blows, because I've heard her in Rent and on tv and stuff, and she always sounds like that.
[info]alligatorandme 18th-Nov-2006 04:59 am (UTC)
She sounds drunk during I Dreamed A Dream.

And looked like she was being shocked.
[info]zoaster_toaster 17th-Nov-2006 10:30 pm (UTC)
Based on the Les Mis video, the guy who plays Marius and Daphne Rubin-Vega have the best voices, hands down. I'm, however, curious to see what Aaron Lazar is like as Enjorlas, because I liked him in "Light in the Piazza".
[info]zinnia_ziegler 17th-Nov-2006 10:37 pm (UTC)
Oh my God, I have to see Les Mis.
[info]lovablemess 17th-Nov-2006 10:38 pm (UTC)
I really need to see Les Miserables. I've seen it twice before (which is so not enough), and I've been excited for this new production since I found out. The guy who plays Jean Valjean is from my area, and the son of the director of my theatre group used to do theatre with him.
[info]ohwhat_aworld 17th-Nov-2006 10:58 pm (UTC)
does anyone know if gary beach is going to be travelling with this production to los angeles(pantages) or if it will travel? he's my favorite broadway actor!
[info]alligatorandme 18th-Nov-2006 04:58 am (UTC)
The revival likely will not tour. Or, if it does, it'll be non-Equity. They're likely going to wait for the revival to close so they can use the physical production (sets, costumes, props) for the tour.

They made a big deal about the tour closing this summer (I was there) and I'm betting they'll wait for regional rights to see if that becomes their cash cow rather than going back into the touring biz. Sacramento Music Circus and a regional theatre in Utah are already planning their own productions. I think North Shore Music Theatre is as well.
