Michael J. Fox -- Wow.

This is so upsetting. Michael J. Fox discusses stem cell research, and you can see exactly how bad he's gotten. It's so freakin' sad.

prdarkstar 24th-Oct-2006 12:12 am (UTC)
My grandmother has it as well. It's painful to watch
lee_gardener 24th-Oct-2006 03:38 am (UTC)
My granddaddy too.
rebel_waltz 24th-Oct-2006 11:48 pm (UTC)
mine too.
readysetlie 23rd-Oct-2006 11:57 pm (UTC)
it's the medicine that makes a person twitch and move like that.
bogie_bacall 24th-Oct-2006 12:01 am (UTC)
Yup. Michael has said that on TV before. Horrible either way.
spikeygrrl 24th-Oct-2006 08:23 pm (UTC)
The meds help to a certain extent, but they can also cause tremors.

From here:

Side Effects of This Medicine

[...]

More common

Abnormal thinking: holding false beliefs that cannot be changed by fact; agitation; anxiety; clenching or grinding of teeth; clumsiness or unsteadiness; confusion; difficulty swallowing; dizziness; excessive watering of mouth; false sense of well being; feeling faint; general feeling of discomfort or illness; hallucinations (seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not there); hand tremor, increased; nausea or vomiting; numbness; unusual and uncontrolled movements of the body, including the face, tongue, arms, hands, head, and upper body; unusual tiredness or weakness

Parkinson's can look really awful even when you are on medication.
lovenoelg 24th-Oct-2006 12:02 am (UTC)
Wouldn't it be the lack of meds?
_anglophile 24th-Oct-2006 12:34 am (UTC)
Even so, it's upsetting that it's gotten to the point where the medicine has made him do that.

:(
fouralarm 24th-Oct-2006 01:52 am (UTC)
What happens without the medicine?
basketcasey15 23rd-Oct-2006 11:58 pm (UTC)
That is really scary and sad.
kissliss 24th-Oct-2006 12:31 am (UTC)
Is that the little girl from the salt box?
basketcasey15 24th-Oct-2006 12:33 am (UTC)
Yup
afilteredview 23rd-Oct-2006 11:59 pm (UTC)
poor guy
lovenoelg 24th-Oct-2006 12:00 am (UTC)
That is heartbreaking.

I sincerely hope that he stopped taking his medicine just to make a point in the commercial, and that he really doesn't have to endure that all day, for his entire life.

:(
anterrabre 24th-Oct-2006 02:23 am (UTC)
I'm not sure. My partner's stepdad had the beginning of Parkinson's, and he had a more tame version of that twitch that was still pretty severe. :(
rocknrolldetox 24th-Oct-2006 03:15 am (UTC)
I have it on excellent authority that he in fact does NOT take his medication when publicly speaking about stem cell research so people get the full view of what the illness can do. I can't imagine that he's that much better though he has been battling it for awhile. He's brave to be "naked" like this for the cameras.
evilgmbethy 24th-Oct-2006 05:53 am (UTC)
My grandmother has Parkinson's. They gave her medicine to control the tremors and it gave her horrible hallucinations, I saw it happen. She was talking to people who weren't there and getting scared. She said she'd much rather have the tremors than the awful hallucinations, so sadly, he's probably better off shaking then going into chemical insanity.

It's such a horrible fucking disease.
julierocket 24th-Oct-2006 12:00 am (UTC)
I love that man. So much respect.
elliottsherman 24th-Oct-2006 12:01 am (UTC)
Ugh, this breaks my heart. I love him. He's so cute, and so is his family.
juansdrivethru 24th-Oct-2006 12:01 am (UTC)
can someone post the link in a reply to my comment? i dont see anything on the page.
juansdrivethru 24th-Oct-2006 12:05 am (UTC)
wow. that's so horrible.
bellelvsbeast 24th-Oct-2006 12:02 am (UTC)
That's just so sad...I hadn't seen him in awhile so it was surprising and distressing to see just how bad he's gotten...
It's such a horrible disease and he just seems so young.
I wonder if he gets dizzy and sick to his stomach because of all the motion...:(

macaroni1213 24th-Oct-2006 12:30 am (UTC)
Well the fuck Perez.

So WHAT if he's exagerating a little (which I don't think he is). If it gets people to realize how bad this disease can mess you up, then I'm all for it.
mercystars 24th-Oct-2006 12:46 am (UTC)
So does Rush Limbaugh.
prisonero 24th-Oct-2006 12:03 am (UTC)

lovenoelg 24th-Oct-2006 12:14 am (UTC)
He became a citizen, I believe.
milkradio 24th-Oct-2006 01:39 am (UTC)
My first thought when he said "Americans like me" was "Wait, what? I thought you were Canadian ;_;" But then I remembered he has American citizenship too.
anakisa 24th-Oct-2006 12:04 am (UTC)
Fuck. That's just tragic, man.
I don't even get what the problem is with allowing stem cell research.
I mean, hello?! That shit isn't even differentiated!
dozydotes 24th-Oct-2006 12:13 am (UTC)
But they are saving innocent life by stopping the research of cures for life threatening illness!
anakisa 24th-Oct-2006 12:17 am (UTC)
God, you're right.
I forgot that stuff like viagra and hiding drug abuse in sports takes precedence over such unimportant shit as this!
celica18l 24th-Oct-2006 12:17 am (UTC)
A lot of it has to do with them cloning. Somewhere I read it had to do with cloning but I think there should be limits on it allow the research just no clons.
chanelshowgirl 24th-Oct-2006 12:33 am (UTC)
I believe in it to an extent. Type 1 Diabetes is wide-spread on both sides of my family, and I would love to see people like my mother and grandmother recover. However, there are MANY cases where stem cells don't work and have even made a sick person worse. Also, there is the fear that stem cells will lead to cloning, which many people are opposed to [not just the religious right].
hydrocarbons 24th-Oct-2006 12:57 am (UTC)
I totally agree
ghost_dance 24th-Oct-2006 01:46 am (UTC)
yeah but do you really think that crazy christian evangelicals really know what ~*ScIeNcE*~ is anyway?
alexmack 24th-Oct-2006 08:24 pm (UTC)
i agree. even if the stem cells come from aborted fetuses isnt some good coming out of death? and in the other case, such as when people have embryos frozen and then have all the invitro and all the kids they want, well they flush those other embryos down the toilet. isn't that in direct opposition to what those religious nuts say? of course they are against in vitro in the first place so its not like you can get anywhere in an argument.

if that bill passes in SD about banning abortion and the supreme court turns it back over to the states, it is just a matter of time before those same nuts go after birth control pills. it will happen people!

and of course none of this is a problem if you are rich in the first place, but that goes for everything int his country.
lizzie127 24th-Oct-2006 12:04 am (UTC)
That is really, really really sad. I know a man who has a disease that causes him to go deaf and blind at the same time, which stem cell research could most likely find a cure for. I wanted to kill something when Bush vetoed that bill. Religous Right Is Wrong!
oh_the_ironing 24th-Oct-2006 05:17 pm (UTC)
I agree with embryonic cell research, but saying that this research "could most likely find a cure for" anything is a stretch.
undeniablynikki 24th-Oct-2006 12:05 am (UTC)
Extremely sad. I love BTTF and I used to have the biggest crush on him as Marty.
