Despite looking exactly the same as he did 20 years ago, Keanu Reeves celebrates his 50th birthday today (September 2).
Since making his debut in 1985, Reeves has climbed the ranks to become one of Hollywood's biggest stars, with movies that range from comedy to sci-fi, from romance to Shakespeare.
To mark Reeves's milestone, Digital Spy has selected his
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)
Wooaah'. After a handful of roles on TV and the big screen, Keanu got his mainstream break in this surprisingly awesome sci-fi comedy. Opposite Alex Winter as Bill, he was perfectly cast as the air-headed heavy metal-lover Ted. Its sequel Bogus Journey has also become a cult classic, and a third movie has long been mooted. It's a shame that he hasn't shown off his comedy chops on a more regular basis.
Reeves became a true Hollywood leading star by the time Speed careened into view, returning to his action hero status in the process. Speed is a classic 1990s blockbuster, complete with stunts, explosions and Dennis Hopper. His on-screen partnership with Sandra Bullock was excellent, and he proved he could take on the kind of role that would normally be handed to Bruce Willis or Sylvester Stallone.
The Matrix (1999)
Peak Keanu. This was the film that turned him from a solid action star into a household name. The Matrix is one of the finest films in Hollywood history, let alone among sci-fi fans. Reeves's stoic and almost deadpan style worked excellently for the dark and dystopian world of the Matrix trilogy. He looked damn cool, he kicked ass, and he helped end the millennium with a bang by taking the red pill.
