50 Shades of Grey: Dakota Johnson forbids mum Melanie Griffith to watch her raunchy movie

Dakota Johnson has banned her mum Melanie Griffith from watching Fifty Shades Of Grey when it’s released next year.
Dakota plays leading lady Anastasia Steele in the raunchy flick and although Melanie won’t be heading down to the cinema on Valentine’s Day 2015, she has had a sneak preview of Mr Grey’s room of pain.
She explained: ‘I have not seen Fifty Shades Of Grey. I don’t think I’m going to see it…[Dakota] was like, “You guys cannot come. There’s no way.” So we’re not going. I did go visit for a couple of days when they were shooting just normal stuff. I did see the room of pain — I did go in there and check it out.’

And, er, she doesn’t seem to have any qualms with her daughter stripping off for the S&M-stuffed movie.
‘She’s amazing — so good. It’s just so beautiful to see her doing this,’ she continued (we assume she’s talking about acting in general…).
‘She had her mom and her dad and her grandmother and she’s just taken us all and thrown us away,’ she told indiewire.com. ‘She’s like, “Here I am.”‘

Same here - if ever a book promoted fucked up values, it's 50 SoG
forgethissmile 10th-Aug-2014 11:05 pm (UTC)
Seriously. I thought Twilight was bad in terms of giving people skewed ideas as to how relationships work (or how to deal when a power dynamic has tipped into toxic territory) but 50 Shades ...
felixdharma 11th-Aug-2014 02:28 am (UTC)
chill
smolderhotter 10th-Aug-2014 09:38 pm (UTC)
Aaron Johnson's wife is directing this movie lmao imagine if she put Aaron as the lead :D
vikingsmn 10th-Aug-2014 09:46 pm (UTC)
He's in the movie apparently, in an unspecified role. But if he had been the lead that would be weird.
lucifersam 11th-Aug-2014 01:15 am (UTC)
Oooo he's in it? I didn't know that
zoaster_toaster 10th-Aug-2014 11:19 pm (UTC)
I'm kinda surprised she didn't tbqh
squirrels_oh_no 10th-Aug-2014 09:39 pm (UTC)
I might feel better about FSoG if Anastasia ever seemed totally into BDSM as her own choice, but no, this was never something she was into, she was never turned on by it, she was just turned on by this hot rich guy showering her with gifts and shit.

That and it's fanfic and EL James is a PoS.
zoaster_toaster 10th-Aug-2014 10:00 pm (UTC)
Yeah, she only participates in it because she's in lurve with Christian and his dick and that's no way to get into that shit.
river1728 10th-Aug-2014 10:05 pm (UTC)
Eh even if she was into the BDSM aspect, he was still abusive towards her.
meow_tan 10th-Aug-2014 10:11 pm (UTC)
she never liked the gifts he gives her though. she even tries to give back the car and books.
squirrels_oh_no 10th-Aug-2014 10:12 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I only got like 50% into the first book and ragequit so I don't remember that much beyond her not liking the BDSM.
zoaster_toaster 10th-Aug-2014 11:21 pm (UTC)
Her reaction to getting a MacBook (not to mention her first email address ever) will forever make me facepalm.
forgethissmile 10th-Aug-2014 11:07 pm (UTC)
It drives me nuts that people love to shrug off the problematic nature of 50 Shades and go, "Well it's a BDSM fantasy!"

No. No it's not. It's a story of a girl with cripplingly low self esteem who gets used and manipulated by a guy who clearly has his own history of sexual abuse. And the underlying message of, "Just do whatever he wants even if you're not comfortable with it because ~you need to keep your lurv around~" is disgusting and already prevalent enough in our society.
felixdharma 11th-Aug-2014 02:22 am (UTC)
I think she was turned on by his personality, how overwhelming he was and her being such a pushover. the ending was surprising
walkintowalls99 10th-Aug-2014 09:41 pm (UTC)
LOL at this oh-it's-too-raunchy PR stunt. Mom and Dad taught her well.

I think it's way more about embarrassment than raunchiness.

But...but she said in her Elle interview that she has no shame!

Some guy tried to sell my mom those books. I told him she wasn't interested and left the bookstore.

lucky_latkes 10th-Aug-2014 09:42 pm (UTC)
Can we all be forbidden from watching it? Was twilight fanfare not enough?
spider_orchid 10th-Aug-2014 09:56 pm (UTC)
Ikr! I do not want to hear 50-60 year old women talking about how wet they got and mess. Ick. Like I'm glad you're getting yours, auntie, but just no...
zoaster_toaster 10th-Aug-2014 10:06 pm (UTC)
Honestly, I'm convinced anyone who's actually turned on by it really isn't getting any sexual satisfaction they need. Thus, they read this shitty smut and think it's the pinnacle of sexual gratification.
fromahippie 11th-Aug-2014 05:24 pm (UTC)
ewwww dnw
weatherstaff 10th-Aug-2014 09:43 pm (UTC)
I got through the first 100 pages of it (i found it online) and it was kinda upsetting that people found the relationship exciting when it was just sad and problematic and really really fucked up.
meow_tan 10th-Aug-2014 09:43 pm (UTC)
this book is so gross and toxic. say what you will about ~atleast women are getting media directed at them~, this book has disgusting messages and no one should be reading it without being aware of that.
bienenkiste 10th-Aug-2014 09:55 pm (UTC)
mte.

and ngl i'm done with some who still refuse to acknowledge its issues because "omg people are ONLY being overly critical because the writer is a woman smh internalized misogyny"
meow_tan 10th-Aug-2014 09:59 pm (UTC)
mtfe

just bc the writer is a woman doesnt mean she cant create gross misogynist literature, which this book is
dr0012 10th-Aug-2014 10:05 pm (UTC)
... and "omg people, it's just fiction/fantasy, we are not stupid". Last time I checked women do get stalked in real life, do get coerced into accepting sexual intercourse, get bruised and controlled because of jealousy, are made to believe they somehow wanted it/deserved it if they got physically aroused, are educated in accepting a man's bad behaviour or excessive attentions as a sign of caring, or that they can save a bad boy with their love and patience, are taught that "a man knows better than you", that beauty is all their worth etc...
zoaster_toaster 10th-Aug-2014 10:01 pm (UTC)
Amen - and women are often the worst perpetrators of sexism and subservience to men.
smolderhotter 10th-Aug-2014 10:10 pm (UTC)
so many people think it has 'deep meaning' I just can't........................................................................................................
la_petite_singe 10th-Aug-2014 10:40 pm (UTC)
THIS. I refuse to applaud a film helmed by women if the story/message is actively misogynistic. I'm not saying it has to be a ~perfect art film or something, but when it's THAT fucked-up and offensive? Gurl, bye.
forgethissmile 10th-Aug-2014 11:11 pm (UTC)
And it perpetuates the attitude that deep down women really want to be raped. From the book's storyline and from the reaction it gets from some women.
felixdharma 11th-Aug-2014 02:24 am (UTC)
it's just a book
rainstormraider 10th-Aug-2014 09:50 pm (UTC)
Wait, she's whose daughter?
Did not know this at all.
spider_orchid 10th-Aug-2014 09:54 pm (UTC)
Dude looks like Anton Yechin without facial hair. Not that that's a bad thing but...yeah no...
river1728 10th-Aug-2014 10:07 pm (UTC)
omg I kind of see it...
flawedinsomniac 10th-Aug-2014 09:54 pm (UTC)
what, I didn't know that her mom is Melanie Griffith
noneformethanx 10th-Aug-2014 10:00 pm (UTC)
Nepotism at its finest. Melanie's mom is Tippi Hendren from Alfred Hitchcoks The Birds
smolderhotter 10th-Aug-2014 10:12 pm (UTC)
omw i did not know that...Tippi was gorgeous as a young woman (and looks good now as an old lady too), she must be the prettiest in that family :D
masterofmystery 10th-Aug-2014 10:31 pm (UTC)
her dad's don johnson, so she was set for nepotism in utero
poetic_daze 10th-Aug-2014 09:58 pm (UTC)
lbr...this movie can really only hope to achieve Showgirls status
meow_tan 10th-Aug-2014 09:59 pm (UTC)
nothing can achieve showgirl status
poetic_daze 10th-Aug-2014 10:06 pm (UTC)
i know... but its a glorious masterpiece of camp, debauchery and the worst possible writing, acting and directing.

it brings new joys with each viewing... i imagine FSoG will only bring nausea.
honey_child 10th-Aug-2014 10:03 pm (UTC)
It wishes.
nicolesaid_uck 10th-Aug-2014 10:04 pm (UTC)

harleenfrances 11th-Aug-2014 01:46 am (UTC)
yeah i want that beyonce song.
felixdharma 11th-Aug-2014 02:27 am (UTC)
in a perfect world it'd have a new toxic version by brit cuz its on the book.

enough of fucking beyonce
factorywannabe 10th-Aug-2014 10:00 pm (UTC)
I kinda hope the director and screenwriter were able to fix some of the problems stemming from the novel. You can be all angsty and have a bad boy image, without mistreating women b
meow_tan 10th-Aug-2014 10:15 pm (UTC)
my idea is that it will go two ways

either the story will be a faithul adaptation leaving christian in all his abusive glory and women will either fawn over how ~romantic~ it is or finally see how abusive it is

or

the director cuts out the gross abuse and the movie is just a boring, bland, expensive softcore porno
wildlinggirl 10th-Aug-2014 11:37 pm (UTC)
lbr the only thing they're gonna cut is the tampon scene. maybe.

Hopefully, tbh.

psubookworm27 11th-Aug-2014 04:20 am (UTC)
The trailer shows the scene where he feels her up under the table without her consent (In the book, I think he tells her to keep still or he'll spank her or something?) so I'm thinking there will still be plenty of abuse there. But, I think they have to soften it. There's just no way to play these scenes without it being super fucked up. When the reader doesn't have Ana's internal monologue constantly excusing his behavior, it will be obvious.
zoaster_toaster 10th-Aug-2014 10:03 pm (UTC)
I wish we could ban everyone from seeing this PoS.

Also, I'll never forget how my sister met EL James and said she was about as insecure, insufferable, and high-and-mighty as you'd expect her to be.
sky3205 10th-Aug-2014 10:07 pm (UTC)
deets, pls
zoaster_toaster 10th-Aug-2014 10:13 pm (UTC)
My sister works at a major ad agency that partners exclusively with NBCUniversal. They had an event when they acquired the film rights to 50 Shades of Grey and that's where she met EL James. Thank God no one in my family has any desire to see or read this shit so I think we'll be spared into seeing the film.
meow_tan 10th-Aug-2014 10:14 pm (UTC)
seconding deets!!
forgethissmile 10th-Aug-2014 11:14 pm (UTC)
The fact that EL James has been actively and aggressively pursuing 50 Shades fanfiction writers without any hint of recognizing her own hypocrisy is proof enough for me that she's an insufferable human being.

(but now I need deets on this interaction with the ad agency, obviously)
psubookworm27 11th-Aug-2014 04:34 am (UTC)
not even remotely surprised with how she treated people in the fanfic community and how she responds to domestic violence survivors who reach out to her about her book.
iamtheliquorr 11th-Aug-2014 04:37 am (UTC)
So she's an irl ana steele?
